Sony just dropped the PlayStation Plus lineup for January 2026, and while the three free games are decent enough, there’s a twist that’s got players talking, and not all of them are happy about it.
The official announcement came today, confirming Need for Speed Unbound, Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, and Core Keeper as the Essential tier offerings available starting January 6. All three will be up for grabs until February 2, giving subscribers a solid month to add them to their libraries. The leak from reliable insider billbil-kun turned out to be spot-on, as usual, with Need for Speed Unbound leading the pack as the most high-profile title of the bunch.
Need for Speed Unbound, Criterion Games’ 2022 racing entry, scored a respectable 77 on Metacritic and brings the franchise’s signature street racing action to PS5. The timing’s pretty wild though: EA just slapped an 85% discount on the Ultimate Edition, bringing it down to $12.74 until January 8, two days after it hits PS Plus.
Some players are irritated since the game was already part of the Extra/Premium catalog for months, but Sony’s clearly aiming this at Essential subscribers who never tried it.
The real story: PS4 games are officially out
Here’s where things get messy. Sony announced months ago that January 2026 would mark the end of PS4 games in the Essential tier, pivoting exclusively to PS5 titles. Except they didn’t fully commit. Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Core Keeper are both cross-gen, available on PS4 and PS5, which has fans scratching their heads. Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is a remake of the 2010 Wii classic, while Core Keeper is a somewhat niche indie survival sandbox that launched in early access back in 2022.
Not exactly the jaw-dropping PS5 exclusives everyone expected for this supposed “next-gen” shift.
The community reaction has been mixed at best. Some players feel underwhelmed by the lineup, especially compared to December 2025’s five-game haul that included Lego Horizon Adventures, Killing Floor 3, The Outlast Trials, Synduality Echo of Ada, and Neon White.
Those games are still claimable until January 5, so if you haven’t grabbed them yet, do it before they vanish.
What’s next for PS Plus?
Sony’s clearly banking on the fact that most players have moved to PS5 by now, but the execution feels half-baked. The promise of a full PS5 focus didn’t really land when two-thirds of the January lineup still supports last-gen hardware.
Extra and Premium members will get their announcements on January 14, with those games dropping January 20, so there’s still hope for something meatier down the line. Historically, January’s been a strong month for PS Plus, 2025 kicked off with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, God of War Ragnarok hit Extra, and 2024 brought Resident Evil 2 Remake. The bar’s set high.
For now, Need for Speed Unbound is the standout, Epic Mickey: Rebrushed will appeal to Disney nostalgia fans, and Core Keeper might surprise you if you’re into indie co-op experiences.
It’s not the strongest start to 2026, but it’s not the worst either. Just don’t expect Sony’s PS4 phase-out to happen overnight.
