Love can make you feel like a monster, but for Kuroe Akaishi, it’s not just a metaphor. The manga Kaiju Girl Caramelise (Otome Kaiju Caramelize) is officially getting an anime adaptation set to premiere in 2026, and it’s bringing one of the wildest genre mashups we’ve seen in a while: shoujo romance meets tokusatsu kaiju destruction.
The announcement dropped with a promotional video showcasing our protagonist’s daily struggle of being a lovestruck high schooler who literally transforms into a giant monster whenever her emotions go haywire. If you’ve ever felt butterflies in your stomach around your crush, imagine that but with actual city-destroying consequences.
A monster romance like no other
Created by Spica Aoki and serialized in Kadokawa’s Monthly Comic Alive since 2018, the story follows Kuroe, a girl dealing with the world’s most inconvenient condition: falling head over heels for the popular guy Arata Minami triggers partial transformations of her body, eventually turning her into the massive kaiju Halgon. It’s the kind of premise that sounds absolutely bonkers on paper but somehow works perfectly as both a romantic comedy and an action spectacle.
The trailer teases impressive CG sequences of Kuroe’s kaiju form alongside the relatable awkwardness of teenage romance, promising a series that doesn’t take itself too seriously while delivering genuine heart and spectacular monster action.
Powerhouse studio and staff
LIDENFILMS is handling the animation under the direction of Teruyuki Omine, who’s worked on heavy hitters like Attack on Titan: The Final Season and Spy×Family. Series composition comes from Yuniko Ayana (BanG Dream!), with character designs by Mitomi Nakayama. GOOD SMILE FILM is producing, which already has fans excited about potential figure releases down the line.
Voice cast bringing the chaos
The production assembled an impressive lineup of voice talent. Hikari Senga voices our kaiju-transforming heroine Kuroe, while Daishi Kajita (Seshera from Sentai Daishikkaku) plays Arata Minami. The supporting cast includes Akira Sekine, Haruka Shiraishi, and anime veterans Kotono Mitsuishi (Jujutsu Kaisen) and Katsuyuki Konishi (Demon Slayer).
What makes Kaiju Girl Caramelise so appealing is how it takes two seemingly incompatible genres and smashes them together, literally. It’s not often we get a shoujo series where the romantic tension could result in actual urban devastation. With 2026 still on the horizon, this is definitely one to keep on your radar if you’re craving something refreshingly different.
