But one creative father, on reddit, decided to take a completely different route, investing countless hours to build something truly special: a custom gaming PC housed inside an original PlayStation 1 case. Inspired by Sony’s 30th anniversary PS5 announcement, he set out to create what he calls the world’s first “PlayStation 1 Pro.”
A build born from love and nostalgia
The project wasn’t just about assembling hardware. This dad wanted to merge nostalgia with modern gaming power, creating a unique system that would honor gaming history while delivering current-gen performance. Instead of picking up a standard PC case, he gutted a classic PS1 shell and got to work fitting modern components into a space never designed for them.
The component list reads like a well-planned mid-range gaming rig: a Gigabyte A520i Dash DC motherboard, Ryzen 5700X processor, 32GB of RAM, a modified RTX 4060 graphics card, and 2TB of storage. The real challenge came from space constraints. He had to swap the planned CPU cooler for a server-grade one, modify the graphics card to fit, and install three 40mm fans to keep everything cool in such a cramped environment.
Performance that punches above its weight
So what can this PlayStation 1 Pro actually do? At 1080p, it’s a beast. Modern games run smoothly on high to ultra settings, while competitive titles like Fortnite, Valorant, and CS2 deliver high framerates without breaking a sweat. Push it to 1440p and it still holds its own, maintaining 60-90 fps in most games, though demanding AAA titles might require tweaking some settings.
The compact design does come with trademarks of its size: it runs warmer and louder than a traditional tower. But for a system that looks like a piece of gaming history while delivering modern performance, those are minor compromises.
