The gaming world lost one of its most influential figures this weekend. Vince Zampella, the creative force behind Call of Duty and head of Respawn Entertainment, died in a single-vehicle accident on Southern California’s Angeles Crest Highway on Sunday afternoon. He was 55 years old.
The crash occurred around 12:45 p.m. near mile marker 62 in the San Gabriel Mountains. According to the California Highway Patrol, Zampella’s southbound vehicle veered off the road and struck a concrete barrier, sparking a fire. The developer was trapped inside the burning car and pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger who was ejected from the vehicle later died at a hospital. Authorities haven’t released details about what caused the accident.
A career that shaped modern gaming
If you’ve ever played a first-person shooter in the last two decades, you’ve felt Zampella’s influence. He co-founded Infinity Ward and served as its CEO, helping create the Call of Duty franchise that would become one of the best-selling video game series in history. His work on the Modern Warfare series set new standards for storytelling and gameplay in the genre.
After leaving Infinity Ward in 2010, Zampella co-founded Respawn Entertainment, which Electronic Arts acquired in 2017. Under his leadership, the studio delivered hit after hit: Titanfall and its sequel brought fresh mechanics to the shooter genre, while Apex Legends became a free-to-play phenomenon. The studio also developed the critically acclaimed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, proving Respawn could master single-player experiences just as well as multiplayer ones.
More recently, Vince Zampella had taken on additional responsibilities at EA, overseeing the Battlefield franchise and helping guide it through a successful 2025 relaunch that many considered a return to form for the series.
An industry in mourning
Tributes have been pouring in from developers, players, and industry figures who worked alongside Vince Zampella or were inspired by his work. His studios employed hundreds of developers, and his games reached millions of players worldwide. The loss resonates across the entire gaming community, from indie developers who looked up to his innovation to AAA studios that competed with his releases.
Zampella’s legacy extends beyond sales figures and metacritic scores. He helped define what modern shooters could be, pushed boundaries in game design, and mentored countless developers who will carry his influence into future projects. Rest in peace, Vince. Your contributions to gaming will never be forgotten.
