Iron Wok Jan anime adaptation set for 2026 with Fate/Zero director

The culinary world is about to get a whole lot more intense. NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan dropped some exciting news this Monday with the official announcement that Tetsunabe no Jan, the beloved cooking manga from the late 90s, is getting the anime treatment in 2026. And if you thought cooking shows were all about comfort and warmth, think again.

What makes this adaptation particularly interesting is the powerhouse creative team behind it. We’re talking about director Ei Aoki, the mastermind behind Fate/Zero’s intense action sequences, teaming up with TROYCA studio and series composer Makoto Uezu, known for his work on Assassination Classroom and KonoSuba. This isn’t your typical food anime setup, and that’s exactly what has fans buzzing.

The battle begins in the kitchen

The story centers on Jan Akiyama, a cocky teenager with serious culinary skills and an even bigger chip on his shoulder. His mission? Fulfill his grandfather’s dying wish by defeating their family’s longtime rival, Mutsuju Gobancho. When Jan arrives at the Gobancho restaurant, he meets Kiriko Gobancho, his rival’s granddaughter, and sparks fly immediately.

Their clash represents more than just cooking styles. Jan lives by the philosophy that “cooking is competition,” treating every dish as a battleground. Kiriko, on the other hand, believes “cooking is heart,” emphasizing soul and passion over pure technical dominance. It’s this ideological conflict, mirroring their grandfathers’ legendary rivalry, that drives the story forward with genuine tension and character development.

Why this adaptation matters

Originally serialized in Shonen Champion from 1995 to 2000, Tetsunabe no Jan ran for 27 volumes and became a cult classic in the gourmet manga genre. The series was popular enough to spawn sequels like Tetsunabe no Jan! R: Chojo Sakusen and even a mahjong-focused spin-off called Tetsuhai no Jan!

The combination of Shinji Saijyo’s source material with Aoki’s directing style promises something fresh for 2026. If Aoki brings the same energy he delivered with Fate/Zero’s gripping battles to cooking competitions, we might be looking at one of the most hype food anime in recent memory. The “super teaser video” and commemorative illustration released alongside the announcement have already generated serious excitement across social media.

With the anime landscape constantly evolving, seeing a classic manga get this kind of high-profile treatment shows there’s still huge appetite for stories that blend competition, passion, and yes, incredible food.
