Free Mewtwo available now in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Game Freak just dropped an early holiday present for Pokémon trainers, and it’s a big one. Starting today, you can grab yourself a free Mewtwo along with both of its Mega Stones in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Yeah, you read that right—the legendary Genetic Pokémon is up for grabs, and honestly, the timing couldn’t be better.

Here’s the deal: head over to the Mystery Gift menu and claim the Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y stones through the internet option. Once you’ve got them, a special side mission called “Project M” unlocks, leading you straight to Lysandre Labs where Mewtwo is waiting. Beat the encounter, and boom—you’ve got one of the most powerful Pokémon in the game sitting in your party.

There’s one catch, though. You’ll need to have wrapped up the main story before you can access this side mission. So if you’re still exploring Lumiose City and haven’t rolled credits yet, you’ve got some grinding to do.

Why this Mewtwo event actually matters

Let’s be real: Mewtwo has been around since Gen 1. We’ve all caught it, traded it, or at least seen it in our Pokémon Home boxes at some point. But here’s why this particular giveaway is worth paying attention to.

For starters, Pokémon Home isn’t compatible with Legends: Z-A yet. That means even if you’ve got a dozen Mewtwos chilling in cloud storage, you can’t transfer them over. This event Mewtwo is your only shot at having the iconic Psychic-type in Lumiose for now.

Plus, with the Mega Dimension DLC launching on December 10th, you’re going to want all the heavy hitters you can get. Word is that Pokémon levels are going to blast past 100 in that expansion, so having a Mega Mewtwo in your roster isn’t just nice to have—it’s practically essential if you want to tackle the tougher challenges ahead.

While it might not have the same wow factor as November’s Mystery Gift (which brought back a Pokémon that had been MIA for nearly a decade), getting a maxed-out legendary with both Mega Stone variants is still a solid score.

How to claim your Mystery Gift in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

If you’re new to the Mystery Gift system or just need a quick refresher, here’s the rundown. The feature unlocks after you’ve played for about an hour or so—basically once you’ve caught five different Pokémon species and made it to the Pokémon Research Lab to meet Mable.

Once that’s done, press X to open your menu during gameplay, then select Link Play. From there, hit Mystery Gift, and you’ll see two options: “Get via Internet” and “Get with Code/Password.”

For this Mewtwo event, you’ll want to choose “Get via Internet.” Your Switch will connect online, and any available gifts will pop up in a list. Select the Mewtwonite stones, watch them arrive in your game, and you’re all set. The game auto-saves after each gift, so you won’t lose anything.

Just remember—you can only claim each Mystery Gift once per save file, and you’ll need an active internet connection. No Nintendo Switch Online membership required, though, which is a nice touch.

The best part? There’s no expiration date announced for this event yet, so you’ve got time to finish the story if you’re not there already. Just don’t sleep on it forever.
