Hideo Kojima lends his voice to Paul Moledebrandt in Zootopia 2

When worlds collide, magic happens. And that’s exactly what occurred when Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind Metal Gear and Death Stranding, stepped into the recording booth for Disney’s Zootopia 2. The Japanese version of the animated blockbuster features a delightful surprise for gamers and Disney fans alike, Kojima himself voicing one of the film’s characters.

For someone who’s spent decades crafting cinematic experiences in video games, Kojima’s transition to actual voice acting feels like a natural evolution. But even for the legendary developer, this marked a significant first: his debut in animated film dubbing. And not just any film, a Disney production, and specifically, the sequel to one of his all-time favorite movies.

From fan to cast member

Kojima’s love for Disney animation isn’t exactly a secret. Nearly a decade ago, he publicly praised the original Zootopia, placing it among his favorite animated films. Fast forward to today, and that admiration has come full circle in the most unexpected way. Thanks to a personal invitation from Jared Bush, director of Zootopia 2 and creative director at Walt Disney Animation Studios—Kojima landed the role of Paul Moledebrandt, a mole working in Zootopia’s police department.

The timing couldn’t be better. Zootopia 2 has been crushing it at the global box office, raking in over $560 million internationally and surpassing $100 million domestically during its opening weekend. The sequel has quickly established itself as one of the year’s biggest releases and another major win for Disney’s animation division.

In his own words, Kojima couldn’t contain his excitement: “I’ve had many cameos in live-action films and video games, but this is my first experience dubbing an animated film for cinema. And it’s Disney, no less! Plus, it’s the sequel to my favorite film, Zootopia! On top of that, I received an offer directly from director Jared Bush, so I felt very honored and accepted without hesitation.”

A learning experience behind the mic

Despite his brief appearance in the film, Kojima approached the recording session with the curiosity and attention to detail he’s known for in his game development work. The experience gave him fresh insights into the craft of voice acting from the other side of the director’s chair.

“I only participated in a small scene, but even during recording, the production was incredibly well crafted,” Kojima shared. “Thanks to the illustrations, the recording went smoothly. Since I normally focus on directing, I learned a lot by acting in person. It reminded me of the attention voice actors pay to basic aspects like turning script pages and the noise they make.”

The meticulous production methods of Bush and his team left a lasting impression on Kojima, making his first venture into animated film dubbing nothing short of sensational. It’s this kind of cross-pollination between gaming and cinema that continues to blur the lines between these entertainment mediums.

Kojima’s expanding empire beyond gaming

While Kojima’s voice cameo in Zootopia 2 is making waves, it’s just one small piece of his increasingly diverse portfolio. Kojima Productions is juggling multiple high-profile projects across gaming, film, and television.

Following the success of Death Stranding 2, which is currently competing for Game of the Year 2025 at The Game Awards—the studio is deep in development on OD, a horror title featuring Jordan Peele, Sophia Lillis, and Hunter Schafer. The late Udo Kier was also part of the project before his recent passing.

Then there’s Physint, Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game being developed in partnership with PlayStation and Columbia Pictures. The Death Stranding universe continues to expand as well, with the anime series Death Stranding Isolations coming to Disney+ (release date still TBA), and an animated film called Death Stranding Mosquito in the works with ABC Animation Studio under the direction of Hiroshi Miyamoto and written by Aaron Guzikowski. A live-action adaptation from A24 is also in development.

Kojima’s appearance in Zootopia 2 serves as a perfect example of how gaming’s most visionary creators are increasingly finding themselves welcomed into Hollywood’s ecosystem. As the boundaries between interactive and traditional entertainment continue to dissolve, collaborations like this feel less like novelties and more like glimpses into the industry’s future.

The Japanese release of Zootopia 2 hits theaters on December 5, and expectations are sky-high following the film’s phenomenal performance in China, South Korea, and other Asian markets. For fans attending those screenings, keep your ears open for Kojima’s cameo—it’s a small moment, but one that represents something much bigger.
