Netflix is taking the Mystery Machine down a darker road, and they’re bringing a familiar voice along for the ride. Frank Welker, the legendary voice behind Scooby-Doo for over 50 years, is officially returning to voice everyone’s favorite cowardly Great Dane in the streaming giant’s upcoming live-action series.
This isn’t just another Scooby-Doo reboot. Netflix announced the project back in March with Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg attached as showrunners, promising a “modern reimagining” that’s already turning heads with its surprisingly mature premise.
A mystery with bite
Forget the goofy villains in rubber masks. This series takes place at Camp Ruby-Spears during what becomes anything but a typical summer vacation. Old friends Shaggy and Daphne stumble upon a lonely Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed an actual supernatural murder. They team up with pragmatic townie Velma and the mysterious new kid Freddy to investigate, but the real mystery might be the secrets each member of the gang is keeping from one another.
The logline alone signals a major tonal shift from the Saturday morning cartoons we grew up with. This feels more “Stranger Things meets Scooby-Doo” than classic Hanna-Barbera, and honestly? We’re here for it.

The voice that launched a thousand zoinks
Frank Welker’s involvement is the cherry on top of this intriguing sundae. The man has been the voice of Fred Jones since the very beginning in 1969, and took over Scooby-Doo duties in 2002. His resume reads like a masterclass in voice acting—Megatron, Soundwave, Abu from Aladdin, Nibbler from Futurama—the list goes on for literal pages.
Having Welker voice Scooby in a live-action format is a genius move that bridges the nostalgia gap. While teen actors will bring the human characters to life (casting is underway with screen tests happening now), that iconic “Ruh-roh!” will remain exactly as we remember it.
Behind the scenes
Production is gearing up to start filming in April 2026 in Atlanta. The creative team is currently hunting for fresh-faced teen actors to portray the high-school-aged Mystery Inc. crew, so expect some new talent to make their mark on these beloved characters.
Behind the scenes, it’s an all-star production team. Greg Berlanti (the mastermind behind the Arrowverse) is executive producing alongside Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman through Berlanti Productions. André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner are also on board through Midnight Radio, with Warner Bros. Television and Netflix co-producing.
Netflix hasn’t announced a release date yet, but with filming scheduled for spring 2026, we’re likely looking at a late 2026 or 2027 premiere.
The idea of a darker, more grounded Scooby-Doo might raise some eyebrows, but with Welker’s comforting voice anchoring the show to its roots and a talented team behind the camera, this could be the fresh take the franchise needs. After all, those of us who grew up watching the gang solve mysteries are adults now—maybe it’s time Scooby-Doo grew up with us.
