A mysterious product code discovered on Nintendo’s official Account Portal is sparking speculation about a possible new Nintendo Switch 2 variant, just seven months after the console’s launch.
Bluesky user dootsky.re uncovered the code “OSM” on January 14, triggering theories about a potential Switch 2 Lite or OLED model already in development.

The OSM discovery and what it means
The discovery came through Nintendo’s internal web service that generates system icons based on product codes. When entering “OSM” into the portal, it returns an image of a Switch 2 console, the same SVG used for the current model with code “BEE”.
What makes this finding significant is that attempting other random code combinations results in error messages, confirming OSM is a legitimate entry in Nintendo’s system.
According to data pulled from the Wayback Machine, the OSM code was added to Nintendo’s website between September 9 and September 16, 2025, just three months after the Switch 2’s June 2025 launch.
This timeline suggests Nintendo has been planning a hardware revision for quite some time, even as the base model continues performing strongly in the market.
For context, the original Switch family followed a similar pattern with distinct but related product codes: HAC for the base model, HDH for the Switch Lite, and HEG for the Switch OLED. The Switch 2’s completely different “BEE” code broke that convention, and now OSM doesn’t align with either naming scheme, adding to the mystery.
Theories range from budget to premium
The gaming community has split into two main camps regarding what OSM might represent. The first theory suggests “Ounce Small Model,” referencing the Switch 2’s rumored development codename “Ounce.”
This interpretation points toward a Switch 2 Lite, a handheld-only version without detachable Joy-Cons, similar to the original Switch Lite that launched 2.5 years after the base model. With current RAM shortages threatening to drive tech prices higher in 2026, a budget-friendly option could help Nintendo maintain accessibility.
The competing theory interprets OSM as “OLED Screen Model,” predicting a premium revision with an upgraded display. The Switch 2 currently ships with an LCD screen, which disappointed some fans who expected OLED after the previous generation’s upgrade. An OLED variant would follow Nintendo’s established pattern of mid-cycle improvements.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa mentioned earlier this month the company’s desire to make the Switch 2 more accessible to first-time console buyers, lending credibility to the Lite theory. However, the Switch 2 has already sold over 10 million units since launch, proving demand exists at its current $450 price point.
Whatever OSM turns out to be, Nintendo isn’t officially commenting. The discovery has reignited the rumor mill that’s been following the company for years, leading one ResetEra user to joke that Nintendo “has been very leaky over the last two years. Maybe they need a plumber?”
