A modder just turned Sony’s handheld dreams into reality by transforming a PlayStation 4 Slim into a fully functional portable console, complete with a crisp OLED screen, custom cooling, and enough battery to actually game on the go.
The project comes from Reddit user wewillmakeitnow, who spent months redesigning, testing, and rebuilding the PS4 Slim into what might be the most advanced PlayStation handheld ever created outside Sony’s labs.
This isn’t some streaming-only device like the PlayStation Portal. This thing runs PS4 games locally, no internet connection needed, no PS5 required in your living room.

Engineering a console that was never meant to be portable
Turning a home console into a handheld is no simple task, especially when you’re working with hardware that guzzles power like the PS4 Slim. The modder started by analyzing the PS4 Slim motherboard, identifying which sections could be trimmed and optimized without killing the console’s functionality.
The goal wasn’t just making it smaller but actually improving power efficiency and thermal performance.
The custom chassis was 3D printed from ABS plastic, chosen specifically for its heat resistance and durability. Tucked inside is a redesigned heatsink and fan system that keeps temperatures in check despite the compact form factor.
But here’s the clever part: an ESP32 microcontroller running custom firmware constantly monitors temperature, power consumption, and battery status in real time. This mini brain can enforce thermal limits and trigger emergency shutdowns if things get too hot, turning what could’ve been a meltdown risk into a surprisingly stable device.
OLED screen and hybrid functionality
The screen choice sets this build apart from typical handheld mods. Instead of settling for a basic IPS panel, wewillmakeitnow went with a 7-inch OLED display running at 1080p in 16:9 format. The OLED delivers deep blacks, vibrant colors, and fast response times, perfect for PS4 games that were designed for that exact resolution anyway.
The portable PS4 Slim doesn’t lock you into handheld-only gaming either. It features an HDMI output for connecting to external displays, essentially functioning like a regular PS4 Slim when docked.
There are also USB and USB-C ports, including a USB 3.0 connection for plugging in external hard drives to expand storage, because PS4 game sizes can eat through space fast.
Power comes from six 21700 lithium-ion battery cells providing a combined 130Wh capacity. Battery life varies depending on what you’re running: lighter games can stretch gameplay to around 2.5 to 3 hours, while graphically demanding titles will drain the battery in about 90 minutes.
The console can charge and play simultaneously, which matters when you’re pushing hardware this powerful in a portable shell.
The modder made it clear this is a personal engineering challenge with no plans for commercial sale or mass production.
That’s unsurprising given the legal and licensing complications, but it’s still an impressive demonstration of what dedicated hardware enthusiasts can pull off. The device runs the full PS4 Slim library natively without compromises, proving that a true PlayStation handheld is technically possible even if Sony isn’t making one.
