Intel’s “Unified Core” team is real, and P-Cores are living on borrowed time

Intel's job listings just confirmed what leakers have been saying for months: the P-core era has an expiration date, and Titan Lake is the one flipping the switch.

For a while, the whole “Intel Unified Core” thing felt like one of those leaks you file under interesting but unconfirmed and move on. Well, that just changed.

A new Intel job listing has surfaced referencing a dedicated “Unified Core design team,” and the role, a senior CPU verification engineer based in Austin, is focused on pre-silicon functional verification work.

In other words, this isn’t a rumor anymore. Intel has an actual team, with actual budget, working on this.

So what exactly is a Unified Core?

Since Alder Lake back in 2021, Intel has built its mainstream CPUs around a hybrid design: Performance cores (P-cores) for heavy workloads like gaming or video editing, and Efficiency cores (E-cores) to handle background tasks without draining your battery. It worked, and it still works, but the cracks are starting to show.

Managing two different core families means increased validation complexity, more software friction for schedulers and power management, and more headaches as core counts grow. A Unified Core would basically tear down that wall.

Intel returns to memory market after 40 years

The concept is that a single Unified Core could act like a performance-oriented P-core to maximize single-thread output, then morph into an E-core role when efficiency is needed, all without Intel needing to design, validate, and maintain two completely separate microarchitectures.

Think of it like AMD’s Zen 5 and Zen 5c approach, but taken further: one architectural foundation, different configurations, no identity crisis between core types.

The P-Core era has an expiration date

According to leaker SiliconFly, Razer Lake’s Griffin Cove will be the last Intel P-core. After that, the P-core team is “going bye-bye,” and Titan Lake, expected around 2028, is set to introduce the new Unified Core.

The roadmap looks something like this: Nova Lake arrives in 2026 still rocking the hybrid design, Razer Lake follows in 2027 as the last hurrah for P-cores, and then Titan Lake flips the switch. The job posting targets pre-silicon engineering stages, which means the Unified Core is still early, but the fact that Intel is already staffing a dedicated team tells you this is serious, not experimental.

There’s also a deeper connection here. Past leaks tied this whole effort to Jim Keller’s Royal Core project, which also involved Rentable Units, a concept where a single Unified Core could potentially spawn four smaller cores to handle multi-threaded workloads. If that pans out, Intel wouldn’t just be simplifying its architecture, it would be rethinking how threads work at a fundamental level.

The job listing itself doesn’t confirm a launch product or timeline, so temper your expectations for now. But between the leaks from an Intel engineer in China last year, the SiliconFly confirmation, and now an official job posting with the “Unified Core” label front and center, the picture is getting clearer by the day.

The hybrid era isn’t dead yet. But it has a clock ticking on it.
