The former Superman is trading his cape for something even more massive. Henry Cavill journey into the Warhammer 40,000 universe isn’t just another Hollywood cash grab, it’s a labor of love that’s been years in the making, and it might just redefine how studios approach beloved franchises.
From Tabletop to screen
Amazon MGM Studios officially greenlit the Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe back in December 2022, with Cavill not only starring but executive producing the entire project. For those unfamiliar, Warhammer 40K is a sprawling sci-fi universe set in the far future where humanity teeters on the edge of extinction, battling traitors, alien empires, and chaos gods. It’s complex, dark, and notoriously difficult to adapt.
Cavill recently opened up about the challenges. “It is a tricky IP, and a very complex IP, and that’s what I love about it,” he told Esquire in June 2025. The actor admitted this project is different from anything he’s done before because he’s actually got his hand on the creative tiller, working closely with Games Workshop to ensure the adaptation stays true to the source material’s intricate lore.
Beyond Warhammer
While fans eagerly await news on Warhammer, Henry Cavill isn’t sitting idle. He recently wrapped production on the live-action Voltron adaptation for Amazon Prime Video in May 2025, playing King Alfor in what producer Bob Koplar promises will be “the Voltron experience our fans have been dreaming of.” The film, directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, is expected to hit streaming in 2026.

Netflix is also getting more Henry Cavill magic with Enola Holmes 3, where he returns as Sherlock Holmes alongside Millie Bobby Brown. Filming wrapped in mid-2025, and this installment promises a darker tone, think what Prisoner of Azkaban did for Harry Potter. Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey, an action thriller co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González, is also in post-production after switching distributors in late 2025.
Then there’s Highlander, the reboot directed by John Wick’s Chad Stahelski. Cavill will play an immortal warrior in what sounds like the perfect spiritual successor to his Witcher days. Though production faced delays after Cavill sustained an injury during pre-production training in September 2025, the film is now targeting early 2026 for shooting.
What makes Cavill’s current slate so compelling is his clear commitment to quality over quantity. He’s not just showing up for a paycheck, he’s involved in the creative process, fighting to preserve the soul of these stories. That approach might take longer, but for fans tired of watered-down adaptations, it’s exactly what they’ve been waiting for.
