Sleepy Castle Studio and HypeTrain Digital confirmed this past November 23, 2025 that their Paper Mario-inspired RPG Escape from Ever After will launch on January 23, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
The genre-bending adventure promises to deliver everything fans loved about the classic Paper Mario games with a fresh twist: fairytale heroes fighting back against capitalism.
When protagonist Flynt Buckler storms the castle of his dragon nemesis Tinder expecting an epic showdown, he finds something way worse than a fire-breathing villain. The fortress has been converted into corporate offices, complete with coffee-sipping drones filing reports.
Turns out a real-world megacorp called Ever After Inc. discovered storybooks are untapped markets ripe for exploitation, cheap labor, and profit. With no choice but to get a job, Flynt teams up with his former enemy to climb the corporate ladder and sabotage the company from within.
What makes it feel like Paper Mario
The premise is wild, but the gameplay is where things get seriously familiar for Paper Mario fans. Escape from Ever After nails the turn-based combat with perfectly-timed action commands that let you finish enemies with style.
You’ll build and customize your party with fairytale characters, each packing unique skills you can equip and upgrade throughout the journey.
The demo that dropped in October 2025 already has a 98% positive rating on Steam, with players praising the snappy battles and charming writing.
Beyond the obvious combat similarities, Escape from Ever After captures that storybook aesthetic Paper Mario perfected.
The game plays out in 2.5D layered dioramas where you jump, explore, and hunt for collectibles like Sun Gems and ink bottles tucked in corners.
Characters have overworld abilities too, Flynt’s buckler throw lets you strike enemies before battle starts, Wolfgang the wolf plays magical music on his lute to grow plants, and each party member feels distinct both in and out of combat.
The badge system, the partner mechanics, the emphasis on timing, it’s all there.
Jumping between storybook worlds
You’ll dive into multiple storybook worlds that shift genres constantly. One moment you’re solving a noir murder mystery while fleeing Lovecraftian horrors in a town called Innsbeak, the next you’re facing off against evil versions of The Three Little Pigs trying to bulldoze a fairytale forest for real estate.
Between adventures, you return to Ever After Inc.’s headquarters, Tinder’s old castle turned open-plan office, where you can decorate your workspace and engage in water-cooler banter with coworkers.
The game originally launched as a Kickstarter in December 2022 under the name Flynt Buckler Wakes the Sleepy Castle before evolving into what it is now.
Composer Daniel Whitworth created a jazzy big-band soundtrack that keeps the energy pumping throughout, adding another layer of personality to an already colorful package.
With a free demo still available on Steam and the full release hitting all major platforms simultaneously, there’s no excuse not to give this one a shot.
