GDC 2026 delivered one of the most significant gaming tech announcements in recent memory. Right after Microsoft pulled back the curtain on Project Helix, the codename for the next-gen Xbox console, AMD stepped in with a reveal of its own: FSR Diamond, a next-generation upscaling suite that looks set to redefine how games are rendered in the years ahead. The two announcements aren’t a coincidence.

They’re two pieces of the same puzzle, and together they paint a pretty exciting picture for the future of gaming hardware.

The news came on March 11 at the GDC 2026 Xbox Developer Summit, where Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation at Xbox, laid out the early technical blueprint for Project Helix. Shortly after, AMD’s SVP and GM of Computing and Graphics, Jack Huynh, took to social media to officially put a name to AMD’s next FSR generation, and that name is Diamond.

FSR Diamond: Everything new under the hood

To really appreciate what FSR Diamond represents, it helps to know where AMD is coming from. The current generation of the technology, FSR Redstone, already brought a serious suite of ML-powered tools to the table, ML-based upscaling, ML Frame Generation, ML-powered Ray Regeneration, and Radiance Caching. It was a meaningful step forward. FSR Diamond is the next one, and it goes further across the board.

The new suite is built around next-generation neural rendering at its core. That means next-gen ML-based upscaling, a brand new ML-based multi-frame generation path, something AMD hasn’t offered in this form before, and next-gen ray regeneration for both ray tracing and full path tracing. Powering all of it is a dedicated NPU, a Neural Processing Unit, that handles the heavy lifting for everything from multi-frame generation to neural texture compression.

That multi-frame generation piece deserves a little extra attention. It’s the kind of feature that puts AMD in a much stronger position against NVIDIA’s DLSS ecosystem, which has had a significant head start in the AI-driven frame generation space. FSR Diamond closing that gap, and potentially doing it at the hardware level, is exactly what the competition needed to heat up.

A multi-year partnership that goes deeper than a logo on a slide

What makes FSR Diamond different from previous FSR releases isn’t just the technology itself, it’s how it’s being built. This isn’t a suite that AMD developed independently and then handed off to Microsoft to figure out. FSR Diamond is being co-engineered alongside Project Helix from the ground up, deeply integrated into the Xbox GDK so developers can tap into it without having to reinvent the wheel for every single game.

Project Helix is powered by a custom AMD SoC, reportedly based on the next-generation RDNA 5 architecture, and according to one report from HotHardware (not yet officially confirmed by either company), potentially built on TSMC’s 3nm process node.

The console is being designed to run both Xbox and PC games, promises an order-of-magnitude leap in ray tracing performance, and integrates intelligence directly into the graphics and compute pipeline. FSR Diamond sits at the center of all of that, serving as the foundation of the entire neural rendering stack.

Jason Ronald described the hardware as delivering “more realistic, immersive, and dynamic worlds for players,” and the ambition is clearly there. Microsoft also announced that Xbox Mode is heading to Windows 11 in April, continuing its push to close the gap between console and PC gaming, a theme that ran throughout the entire GDC presentation.

The RDNA 5 question that has PC gamers nervous

Here’s where things get a bit thornier, at least for players on the PC side. Leaker Kepler_L2, who has a solid track record on AMD-related information, has stated that FSR Diamond will be limited to RDNA 5.

The reason is straightforward: the technology depends on ML acceleration features that are specific to that architecture and aren’t present in older GPU generations. If that holds up, it means anyone with an RDNA 3 or RDNA 4 card would be left out, which wouldn’t be the first time AMD has drawn that kind of line, given how FSR 4 played out.

Neither AMD nor Microsoft has officially confirmed RDNA 5 as the backbone of Project Helix’s SoC, and neither has given a firm timeline for FSR Diamond’s release beyond its connection to the console. Alpha dev kits are set to reach developers in 2027, which means FSR Diamond is still a ways down the road. AMD’s own RDNA 5 Radeon cards are also expected to arrive sometime in 2027, so the timelines appear to be lining up.

There’s also a lingering question about how FSR Diamond connects to Project Amethyst, AMD’s deep co-engineering collaboration with Sony for the PlayStation side of things. How all these threads, Diamond, Amethyst, and whatever ends up in PC Radeon cards, relate to each other is something neither company has addressed clearly yet. It’s one of the more interesting open questions hanging over this whole announcement.

What is clear is that the direction the industry is heading couldn’t be more obvious. AI and machine learning are no longer features being bolted onto graphics pipelines, they’re becoming the pipeline. Both AMD and NVIDIA are betting heavily on their respective upscaling ecosystems, and the race to build the smartest, most efficient rendering stack is shaping up to be one of the defining stories of this hardware generation.

FSR Diamond might still be a couple of years from landing in your hands, but AMD and Microsoft appear to be building something with real substance behind it. The next Xbox could end up being one of the most technically ambitious gaming platforms ever shipped, and we’re only just starting to see what it’s capable of.
