Amazon’s God of War series lands its Atreus with Callum Vinson

The young actor joins Ryan Hurst in Amazon's two-season adaptation of the acclaimed PlayStation franchise, with production set to begin in Vancouver.

Amazon Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of God of War has officially cast its second lead role. Callum Vinson will portray Atreus, the ten-year-old son of Kratos, joining Ryan Hurst who was announced last month as the Ghost of Sparta himself.

The casting confirms one of the most anticipated roles in the video game adaptation, bringing the father-son duo at the heart of the Norse saga to life.

Vinson, a young actor building momentum in the industry, brings a solid resume to the role despite his age. He previously appeared in Amazon’s Dead Ringers, Peacock’s Long Bright River alongside Amanda Seyfried, and the horror series Chucky.

He also voices Piglet in Disney Jr.’s Playdate with Winnie the Pooh. His upcoming projects include a role in Netflix’s third season of The Night Agent and, notably, portraying young Jason Voorhees in Peacock and A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, set to premiere later this year. God of War marks his third collaboration with Sony Pictures Television and represents the biggest project of his career so far.

The journey begins in Vancouver

Amazon’s God of War received a two-season order and is currently in pre-production in Vancouver. The series adapts the storyline from the 2018 God of War game and its sequel God of War Ragnarök, following Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother.

According to the official character description, Atreus grew up in a remote forest cabin, isolated from the world and raised almost entirely by his mother. He’s an accomplished archer with an affinity for animals and intense curiosity about what lies beyond his forest home.

After his mother’s death, Atreus finds himself with a cold, distant father who barely knows him, yet desperately yearns for his approval and is determined to prove he can survive in a harsh and dangerous world.

The cast continues to expand with impressive names. Max Parker will play the antagonist Heimdall, Teresa Palmer joins as Sif, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson portrays Thor, and Mandy Patinkin takes on Odin.

Alastair Duncan reprises his role from the games as Mimir, while Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka play the dwarven blacksmith brothers Brok and Sindri. Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye, known for his work on Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout, will direct the first two episodes.

Ronald D. Moore of Outlander and For All Mankind fame serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

From console to screen

The God of War franchise, which debuted in 2005, became one of PlayStation’s most successful properties.

The 2026 GRAMMYs are giving video game music its moment

The 2018 soft reboot shifted from Greek to Norse mythology and introduced Atreus as Kratos’ son, transforming the series from a solo rage-fueled action game into an emotional father-son journey.

God of War (2018) won numerous Game of the Year awards, while its 2022 sequel God of War Ragnarök continued the critical and commercial success. The live-action adaptation aims to capture that same emotional core while bringing the brutal combat and stunning mythological world to television screens.

No premiere date has been announced yet, but with pre-production underway and casting rapidly filling out, fans can expect the series to arrive on Prime Video sometime in the next couple years.
