Western Digital just dropped a bombshell that should make anyone planning a storage upgrade nervous: they’re completely sold out of hard drives for 2026.
CEO Irving Tan confirmed during the company’s Q2 earnings call that the manufacturer’s entire capacity for this year is booked out, with firm purchase orders locked in from their top seven customers and long-term agreements stretching into 2028.
The reason? AI’s insatiable appetite for storage is eating the market alive.
The AI data monster needs feeding
Cloud revenue now accounts for 89% of Western Digital’s total revenue, while consumer products represent just 5%. That’s not a typo. The pivot from regular users to enterprise clients is complete, and it makes perfect business sense when hyperscalers are throwing money at data center buildouts like there’s no tomorrow.
AI doesn’t work without data, mountains of it. Every ChatGPT prompt, every image generation, every training session produces massive amounts of information that needs storing somewhere. And despite SSDs getting faster and cheaper, HDDs remain the most cost-effective and efficient storage medium for the cold storage layer where all that AI data lives.

Western Digital isn’t sitting idle, though. At their Innovation Day 2026, they unveiled some genuinely impressive tech to keep HDDs relevant in the AI age. The world’s highest capacity 40TB UltraSMR ePMR HDD is in qualification with two hyperscale customers, with volume production planned for late 2026.
They’re also developing High Bandwidth Drive technology that delivers up to twice the bandwidth of conventional drives, with a roadmap pushing toward 8x improvements.
Brace your wallet
Here’s where it gets painful for regular consumers. Contract HDD prices rose 4% quarter-over-quarter in late 2025, marking the largest increase in the past eight quarters. Some models have seen price jumps exceeding 60% since September 2025, with an average increase of 46% across popular drives.

That iconic 24TB Seagate BarraCuda that used to hit $239 during sales? Try $499 now. Western Digital raised prices across their entire HDD portfolio back in September 2025, and they’re not done. Industry sources suggest HDD prices could see increases of up to 10%, with a minimum of 5% expected in the coming quarters.
Adding insult to injury, Western Digital switched from air freight to ocean shipping to cut costs and boost sustainability credentials, which sounds great until you realize it adds six to ten weeks to delivery times. Translation: if you need a drive now, you’re facing both higher prices and potentially empty shelves.
The storage industry hasn’t seen action like this in years. After nearly a decade of shrinking HDD shipments as SSDs took over, AI just flipped the script entirely.
Manufacturers like WD and Seagate aren’t expanding production capacity either, choosing instead to maximize profits from existing facilities by prioritizing high-margin enterprise customers over consumers.
So if you’ve been putting off that NAS upgrade or need more storage for your media server, now might be the time to pull the trigger before prices climb even higher. The era of dirt-cheap storage is officially over.
What’s your take on these HDD price surges? Are you stocking up now or waiting it out?
