The M3GAN universe just hit a major roadblock. Universal has quietly removed the upcoming spinoff film SOULM8TE from its release calendar, less than a month before its scheduled January 9, 2026 debut. The studio is now shopping the completed film to other distributors and streaming platforms, marking a surprising turn for what was supposed to expand the killer AI franchise into new territory.
The timing here is brutal. SOULM8TE had already wrapped principal photography back in November 2024, and the film was essentially sitting on a shelf ready to go. But here’s the thing: Universal never released a single trailer, poster, or promotional image. That radio silence was the first red flag that something wasn’t quite right behind the scenes.
When success turns cold
The original M3GAN was an absolute phenomenon when it dropped in 2022. On a shoestring budget of just $12 million, it raked in over $180 million worldwide and became an instant cultural moment. The killer doll with attitude spawned memes, Halloween Horror Nights attractions, and even merchandise. Universal and Blumhouse had big plans for a shared cinematic universe that would rival The Conjuring franchise.
Then M3GAN 2.0 happened this summer. Despite a bigger $25 million budget, the sequel limped to just $39.1 million globally. The disappointing performance essentially froze the studio’s ambitious expansion plans, and SOULM8TE became collateral damage.
A different kind of AI nightmare
Directed by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother) and produced by horror heavyweights James Wan and Jason Blum, SOULM8TE was pitched as a more mature take on the AI-gone-wrong concept. The plot follows a grieving man who acquires an android companion to cope with his wife’s death, only for things to spiral into deadly obsession. Wan himself described it as “Fatal Attraction but with robots,” positioning it as a sci-fi erotic thriller rather than straight horror.
The creative team behind SOULM8TE is solid. The story came from Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan, with the screenplay by Dolan and Jordan. On paper, this had all the ingredients to work. But in the harsh reality of Hollywood economics, potential doesn’t pay the bills when your franchise’s last entry bombed.
Where SOULM8TE lands next is anyone’s guess. A streaming platform seems like the safest bet at this point. It’s hard to imagine another major studio taking the theatrical distribution risk that Universal just walked away from. The film might get a second chance at life on a service like Netflix or Amazon Prime, where it won’t have to compete for box office dollars and can find its audience organically.
For now, the M3GAN cinematic universe appears to be on life support. Whether this is the definitive end or just a temporary setback remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain: building a horror franchise is way harder than it looks, even when you nail it the first time around.
