Steam community crowns Hollow Knight: Silksong as 2025’s best game

The Steam Awards 2025 just wrapped up, and Hollow Knight: Silksong took home Game of the Year. The metroidvania beat Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which dominated most other awards shows this year, including The Game Awards in December.

Team Cherry's one rule for future Hollow Knight games

Team Cherry’s sequel launched in September 2025 after six years of waiting. Players control Hornet in a faster, harder metroidvania featuring over 200 enemies and sold over 7 million copies by mid-December.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 made history at The Game Awards with 12 nominations and 9 wins, including Game of the Year. The French indie RPG sold 5 million copies by October, but only grabbed Best Soundtrack at the Steam Awards.

The full winners list

Steam users spread the love across multiple categories, avoiding a complete sweep by any single title. Here’s who took home the trophies:

  • Game of the Year: Hollow Knight: Silksong
  • VR Game of the Year: The Midnight Walk
  • Labor of Love: Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Best Game on Steam Deck: Hades II

  • Best Game You Suck At: Hollow Knight: Silksong
  • Best Soundtrack: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
  • Outstanding Story-Rich Game: Dispatch
  • Sit Back and Relax: RV There Yet?

Silksong’s double victory, grabbing both GOTY and Best Game You Suck At, feels perfectly fitting for a title that’s been testing players’ reflexes and patience since launch.

The “Best Game You Suck At” category specifically celebrates the most demanding titles, and Silksong’s reputation for tough boss fights and precise platforming made it a natural fit.

The Steam Awards continue to prove that player choice doesn’t always align with critics, and that’s exactly what makes them interesting.

While Expedition 33 dominated the traditional awards circuit, Steam’s community reminded everyone that sometimes the game that challenges you the most is the one you remember best.
