AI-generated manga hits #1 in Japan’s biggest eBook store

What many feared and others anticipated finally happened at the start of 2026. A work entirely generated by Artificial Intelligence climbed to the top of the sales rankings at Comic C’moA, Japan’s largest electronic bookstore, setting off alarm bells across the traditional publishing sector.

The manga in question, provisionally titled My Dear Wife, Will You Be My Lover?, was released on December 28, 2025 by author mamaya and publisher STUDIO ZOON.

The story, which follows a 35-year-old couple’s attempts to rekindle the spark in their marriage, quickly positioned itself as number one in the Young Adult category.

Commercial success meets technical criticism

The numerical success sharply contrasts with critical reception. User reviews point out obvious technical flaws characteristic of current AI technology: characters that appear “cut and pasted,” flat backgrounds, and excessively long dialogues more typical of a novel than a comic.

While some praise the quality of certain visually striking scenes, most describe the reading experience as “boring” and speculate about the possible use of bots or fake accounts to inflate the work’s rating.

Industry veterans weigh in

The phenomenon didn’t go unnoticed by industry veterans. Kazuaki Ishibashi, renowned editor behind hits like Mob Psycho 100 and The World Only God Knows, commented on X that this situation reveals a harsh truth: the mass of casual readers might not care about the origin of the art.

“Perhaps only we creators are the ones who truly worry about this aspect”, Ishibashi reflected, observing that users discussed the plot more than the AI authorship.

The editor predicts that, given the normalization of these tools, 2026 will be the year computer-generated manga explodes in popularity, forcing human artists to rethink their strategy against automated mass production.

This milestone marks a turning point for the manga industry. Whether readers ultimately embrace or reject AI-generated content remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain: the conversation about creativity, authenticity, and what defines “real” art has only just begun.
