Studio BONES officially confirmed back in August 2022 that SK8 the Infinity is getting a second season, and the skateboarding anime remains in active production.
The announcement came over a year after the series first teased a new anime project at the “Ai no Masquerade” event in July 2021, finally revealing the project would be a full second season alongside an OVA special.
The confirmation arrived via the show’s official Twitter account, sending fans into a frenzy after waiting since the original series wrapped up in April 2021.
BONES and director Hiroko Utsumi proved they were committed to bringing Reki and Langa back to the dangerous underground racing scene known as “S.” While no official release date has been announced for season 2, the studio has assured fans that the main creative team from the first season is returning to handle the sequel.
OVA bridges the gap while fans wait
To keep the momentum going, SK8 the Infinity Extra Part dropped in March 2025, giving fans their first new content in years. The 25-minute OVA features four short stories exploring the daily lives of the show’s beloved characters when they’re not risking their necks in midnight skateboard races.
The stories include “Ame to Neko Konbini Aisu Soda Aji” focusing on Reki, Langa and Miya; “Maji de Maji ni Nareru Koto” centered on Joe and Cherry; “Morning Routine” with Adam and Tadashi; and “Ganbare, Hiromi-chan!” starring Shadow.
The OVA premiered in select Japanese theaters on January 24, 2025 before its physical and streaming release on March 19, exclusively featuring the original voice cast and creative team. It’s currently available on Crunchyroll for international audiences.
What made Season 1 such a hit
SK8 the Infinity burst onto the scene in January 2021 as an original anime, meaning it wasn’t adapted from manga or light novels, following high schooler Reki and Canadian transfer student Langa as they get sucked into “S,” an illegal no-holds-barred downhill skateboarding competition held in an abandoned mine.
The series ran for 12 episodes and quickly built a massive international following thanks to its stunning animation, adrenaline-pumping races, and surprisingly emotional character dynamics.
Studio BONES brought their A-game to the production, with real skateboarding moves inspiring the animation and actual skateboarders consulted for authenticity. The series became a breakout hit on Crunchyroll and Funimation (now merged under Crunchyroll), spawning manga adaptations and a comedy spin-off titled SK8 Chill Out!
Director Hiroko Utsumi, known for her work on Free!, created SK8 the Infinity with series composition by Ichirō Ōkouchi (Code Geass), character designs by Michinori Chiba, and music by Ryō Takahashi. This dream team is confirmed to return for season 2, maintaining the show’s signature style and energy.
Season 2 remains without an official premiere date, but with the OVA successfully released and production actively moving forward, fans are holding onto hope for an announcement sometime in 2026. The series proved that original anime can compete with established franchises, and BONES clearly isn’t ready to let this one fade away.
