Twin Engine announced this Tuesday that the post-apocalyptic political thriller Nippon Sangoku is getting an anime adaptation set to premiere in April 2026. Studio Kafka, the team behind The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2, will handle animation production.
The announcement came with a teaser visual and the first promotional trailer, showcasing director Kazuaki Terasawa’s vision for this dystopian tale of a fractured Japan fighting for reunification.
The project reunites Terasawa with character designer and chief animation director Takahiko Abiru, who previously collaborated on The Ancient Magus’ Bride and crafted character designs for Vinland Saga.
Voice cast brings star power
Leading the cast is Kensho Ono as Aoteru Misumi, the silver-tongued protagonist attempting to reunify a war-torn nation. Ono is best known for voicing Giorno Giovanna in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind and Mikaela Hyakuya in Seraph of the End.
The supporting cast includes Asami Seto as Saki Higashimachi, who voiced Mai Sakurajima in Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai, and Takashi Nagasako as Denki Taira, known for Hachigen Ushoda in Bleach. Megumi Han, who voiced Kana Arima in Oshi no Ko, will serve as the narrator.
Both Terasawa and Abiru celebrated the announcement with special illustrations, signaling their commitment to bringing Ikka Matsuki’s manga to life with the same visual quality that defined their previous collaborations.
A Japan divided
Nippon Sangoku takes place in a near-future where Japan has collapsed under nuclear war, natural disasters, and government corruption. The country has splintered into three warring kingdoms, echoing the historical Three Kingdoms period.
Aoteru Misumi emerges as a young man with neither military pedigree nor battlefield prowess, only an unmatched intellect and persuasive tongue to reunify the fractured nation through diplomacy rather than bloodshed.
The original manga launched on Shogakukan’s MangaONE app and Ura Sunday website in November 2021, accumulating over 700,000 copies in circulation.
The series ranked fifth in the 2023 Manga Taisho awards and has garnered critical acclaim for its blend of political intrigue and post-apocalyptic world-building.
The anime premieres in April 2026, bringing this ambitious story of reunification to screens with Studio Kafka’s signature craftsmanship.
