OptiScaler brings FSR 4 to Vulkan games before AMD even bothered

OptiScaler's latest test build quietly does what AMD hasn't, bringing FSR 4 upscaling to Vulkan-based games through a DirectX 12 bridge, while AMD stays silent on official support.

OptiScaler’s latest test build, version 0.9.0-pre10, released on February 23, has added FSR 4 support to Vulkan-based titles through a DirectX 12 bridge, doing something AMD itself has yet to do despite having FSR 4 out for months.

The update was spotted by Redditor u/eduhfx, who shared the changelog entry confirming the addition: “Added Vulkan w/Dx12 support, FSR4 VK w/Dx12, FSR 2.1 VK w/Dx12.”

The build also connects to a GitHub commit from February 7, 2026 titled “Added FSR2.1.2 w/Dx12 to Vulkan upscalers,” which lines up perfectly with what surfaced in the Reddit post.

What OptiScaler is actually doing here

For context, OptiScaler is an open-source middleware mod that hooks into a game’s upscaler interface and redirects it to a different backend, letting users swap between supported upscaling technologies. Think of it as a translator between what the game speaks and what your GPU can actually run.

What the new test build introduces is an interop mode where Vulkan titles can route their upscaling through a DirectX 12 path to access FSR 4.

It’s not native Vulkan support built into AMD’s own pipeline, but it’s a working compatibility bridge that gets FSR 4 running in games that were completely locked out before. Titles like Doom: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, both Vulkan-based, can now tap into FSR 4’s AI-powered upscaling for the first time.

Since this is a compatibility path and not a native integration, some performance overhead and per-game quirks are expected. OptiScaler also warns against using the mod in games with anti-cheat systems, as it could trigger a ban.

AMD has had months and still hasn’t done this

Since September 2025, AMD officially stated that its FSR 4 driver upgrade feature only works with DirectX 12 games carrying a signed FSR 3.1 DLL, and that Vulkan titles are simply not supported. No workaround, no timeline, no update.

The official FSR 4 supported games list currently sits at around 65 titles, most of them far from being major AAA releases.

FSR 4 is genuinely impressive technology. Its AI-powered reconstruction is a significant jump over FSR 3.1, at 4K, reviewers have found that dropping to FSR 4’s Performance mode can still deliver cleaner results than FSR 3.1 running at Quality, which says a lot about how far the technology has come.

And Vulkan games had zero access to any of that, until now. The community keeps finding ways to expand FSR 4’s footprint, while AMD remains quiet on when or whether an official Vulkan-compatible path is even planned.
