The live-action Gundam movie just pulled off its own mecha-sized plot twist. After ditching the project back in 2024, Netflix is jumping back in to distribute Legendary’s long-awaited adaptation, and it’s not hard to see why, Sydney Sweeney’s name is suddenly attached, and Hollywood’s paying attention.
From development hell to Sydney Sweeney
This project has been stuck in limbo since 2018, bouncing between directors and studios like a damaged mobile suit. Kong: Skull Island’s Jordan Vogt-Roberts was originally tapped to helm the film for Netflix, with Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan crafting the script. By late 2024, Netflix bailed and Vogt-Roberts walked.
The movie looked dead in the water until Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle came aboard to write and direct, bringing his knack for grounded sci-fi storytelling to the mecha universe.
Then Sweeney entered the picture. Fresh off her shocking comeback with The Housemaid, which somehow turned a mid-budget thriller into a nearly $300 million worldwide phenomenon after her Christy biopic tanked, the Euphoria star is now leading the charge into giant robot territory.

Noah Centineo, who’s already filming Street Fighter for Legendary, joined as her co-star in what’s reportedly a Romeo and Juliet-style story with the two characters on opposite sides of an intergalactic war. And just like that, Netflix circled back, clearly drawn by Sweeney’s box office heat.
Japan’s Star Wars finally goes live-action
Gundam isn’t just another anime IP getting the live-action treatment. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino in 1979, the franchise pioneered the mecha genre and became Japan’s Star Wars, spanning 83 animated series and movies with a retail empire generating over $600 million annually.
The original Mobile Suit Gundam is set in the Universal Century, a future where humanity has colonized space due to Earth’s overpopulation. When the colonies demand independence, war breaks out, fought by pilots in towering mobile suits.
This will be the first major Hollywood live-action Gundam film, and Legendary is treating it like a potential franchise starter.
Mickle’s involvement suggests a character-driven approach rather than pure spectacle, which could be exactly what this adaptation needs. Production is eyeing a mid-to-late 2026 start once Sweeney wraps Colman Domingo’s Scandalous! and her Housemaid sequel.
Whether Netflix gives it a theatrical release or keeps it streaming-exclusive remains unclear, but given Sweeney’s momentum and the franchise’s global fanbase, this one’s worth watching.
