Microsoft Edge gets a full Copilot-inspired makeover

Microsoft is giving Edge a fresh coat of paint, and it’s taking design cues straight from its AI companion. The latest development builds of Microsoft Edge have revealed a completely redesigned interface inspired directly by the Copilot app, ditching the traditional look we’ve known for years.

The changes are noticeable right away. According to Zac Bowden from Windows Central who tested the new design, Edge now features heavily rounded corners and a minimalist color palette throughout context menus, settings panels, and even the new tab page.

Microsoft is essentially saying goodbye to Fluent Design in favor of Copilot’s sleeker visual identity.

From browser to AI extension

This update isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about unifying the entire user experience. Microsoft wants the transition between browsing the web and using AI assistance to feel seamless, creating a more integrated digital environment.

“The new design updates elements like context menus, the new tab page, and configuration areas with elements that look like they were pulled straight from the Copilot app.”

Even users who keep AI features disabled will notice the changes. This isn’t an optional theme, it’s a fundamental visual overhaul baked into the browser’s core structure. Typography adjustments and element repositioning make everything feel more cohesive with Microsoft’s AI-first vision.

Rolling out to testers first

The redesigned interface is currently being tested in the Canary and Dev channels, allowing developers to iron out technical details before a wider rollout.

This testing phase is crucial to ensure browsing speed stays snappy while applying new visual effects across the board.

Once testing wraps up, the redesign will hit all Edge users globally. It’s Microsoft’s most ambitious move yet to unify its ecosystem under a single design language, eliminating the visual fragmentation that existed between Windows 11 and its various applications.

The Copilot aesthetic was the exception, now it’s becoming the standard.
