Sometimes the best way to understand your character is through plastic bricks. Mads Mikkelsen, who played Galen Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, recently revealed a charming behind-the-scenes story that perfectly captures the irony of his casting. During a packed panel at Star Wars Celebration 2025, the Danish actor admitted something that might shock fans: he’d never watched a single Star Wars film before landing the role of the Death Star’s reluctant architect.
When Lucasfilm first pitched him the character, explaining it was a prequel to A New Hope and that he’d be playing the inventor of the Death Star, Mikkelsen’s reaction was underwhelming. “I went, ‘Alright?'” he confessed to the crowd. The significance of his role completely escaped him until a Christmas gathering with his brother changed everything.
The LEGO revelation
The moment of realization came during the holidays when Mads Mikkelsen was celebrating with his brother Lars and family. Lars, who happens to voice Grand Admiral Thrawn in Star Wars Rebels and the live-action Ahsoka series, received a gift that would bridge the gap between fiction and reality: the massive LEGO Death Star set.

Lars immediately left the dinner table and dove into the construction project, spending hours piecing together the iconic space station. That’s when it clicked for Mads. “I realized, ‘Hold on. I invented it. I can help him build it'”, he recalled with a laugh.
The image of Galen Erso and Grand Admiral Thrawn, two characters on opposite sides of the galactic conflict, working together to assemble the Empire’s ultimate weapon is the kind of meta moment Star Wars fans live for. It’s worth noting that Lars is actually a huge Star Wars enthusiast, making the contrast between the brothers even more entertaining.
This story perfectly encapsulates the disconnect between an actor’s personal experience and the massive cultural phenomenon they’re stepping into. While Mads was focused on delivering a compelling performance as a tortured scientist, he had no context for just how monumental the Death Star was to millions of fans worldwide.
