Hypixel Studios launched Hytale in early access on January 13 and the pixelated sandbox instantly made waves.
The $20 USD title pulled in nearly 3 million concurrent players on PC during its debut, proving that Minecraft’s decade-long dominance finally has serious competition.
Studio founder Simon Collins-Laflamme had boldly predicted over 1 million players would log in at launch, warning of potential technical hiccups. Reality blew past expectations.
Laflamme himself jumped into a public server under the username “Simon” and revealed 2.8 million users were online simultaneously.
While some fans hit login snags, the launch rolled out smoother than anticipated, and Hytale quickly became an internet sensation, peaking at over 420,000 Twitch viewers and currently sitting above GTA V, Clash Royale, and Valorant on the streaming platform.
A decade of development drama
Getting here was brutal. Hytale’s journey started in 2015 when the team behind Hypixel, one of Minecraft’s most popular servers, decided to build their own sandbox.
Riot Games invested early and acquired the studio outright in 2020. Then came the gut punch: last summer, the League of Legends publisher canceled the project entirely.

Collins-Laflamme refused to let it die. He spent months negotiating to buy back the intellectual property, finally securing the rights in November 2025 and immediately reviving development.
Ten years, one cancellation, and a dramatic resurrection later, Hytale is now live exclusively through its official website. The developers deliberately avoided Steam to dodge negative reviews from “uninformed players.”
What’s next for the Minecraft challenger
This is just the beginning. The early access version lacks features the studio has promised for future updates: minigames, an adventure mode, enhanced social functions, and more.

Hypixel Studios secured funding for the next two years, and the commercial success practically guarantees the project’s future. They’re committed to active support for at least a decade, if the player base holds, we might be watching a new long-term giant emerge.
The game’s available at three price points: the base $20 USD version, plus premium editions at $35 USD and $70 USD.
Whether Hytale maintains this momentum remains to be seen, but its opening salvo just shook up the sandbox genre in a way nothing has since Minecraft took over.
