Helldivers 2 goes tactical with commando missions and stealth-focused update

Arrowhead's new update adds Commando missions and stealth-focused gear, but the community debates if true stealth is possible in the explosive shooter.

Arrowhead Game Studios dropped patch 5.0.2 for Helldivers 2 today marking a tactical shift for the co-op shooter known for its explosive chaos.

The update brings new Commando missions, the Redacted Regiment Warbond, and significant tweaks to suppressed weapons, letting players adopt a stealthier approach, though the community’s already debating whether it actually works as traditional “stealth.”

The update arrives with the promise that “democracy doesn’t always need to shout“, according to Arrowhead, introducing changes that slash the noise radius of suppressed weapons by 50% and shrink the detection range of enemies like Devastators, Berserkers, Chargers, and Impalers when they’re being shot at but not directly hit.

These adjustments aim to give suppressors real value and create “opportunities for coordinated strikes before the enemy knows you’re there,” though the studio clarifies that stealth is a tool, not a substitute for overwhelming firepower.

Commando missions: No air support

Commando missions represent the patch’s boldest addition. These special objectives drop Helldivers deep behind enemy lines where air superiority is no longer an option.

Reinforcements must be deployed in advance and destroyer support is limited and risky, forcing squads to think through every move and bullet.

Activated at 2pm CET on patch day, these missions are a clear nod to tactical espionage classics, challenging players to rethink their strategies in a game historically built for frantic combat.

The Redacted Regiment Warbond accompanies the update with an arsenal designed for covert ops. The R-72 Censor precision rifle sports an integrated suppressor, the AR-59 Suppressor brings full-auto firepower with built-in silencing, and the P-35 Re-Educator dart pistol induces delirium in organics and malfunctions in machines.

For players preferring something more explosive, the B/MD C4 Pack includes six adhesive charges with remote detonation, while the TM-01 Lure mine draws enemies with lights and sounds before exploding.

The light RS-89 Shadow Paragon and medium RS-67 Null Cipher armors feature the Reduced Signature perk for lower noise and detection, and the Concealed Insertion booster deploys smoke screens on Hellpod impact.

Community has questions

However, community reception has been mixed. Players on Reddit and Steam point out that Helldivers 2 doesn’t have a true stealth AI system like dedicated stealth games, and enemies still detect quickly through visual and audio cues even with suppressors equipped.

Many describe the new content as “fun but limited” for real stealth, arguing it works more like attention management and tactical combat than invisible infiltration.

Enemy detection mechanics didn’t fundamentally change with this Warbond, only certain parameters got adjusted, meaning stealth in Helldivers 2 is more about risk reduction and shaping engagements to your advantage than going completely unnoticed.

Still, the general consensus leans positive: Redacted Regiment offers the richest toolkit yet for players willing to think quietly before acting, rewarding squad coordination over blind aggression. Creative players are already experimenting with combinations of lure mines, disruptive darts, and remote C4 to shape the battlefield before things get loud.

Arrowhead also announced they’re making the “slim” PC build of Helldivers 2, which takes up significantly less storage space, the default for all players, with plans to eventually sunset the larger version once the transition is complete.
