Helldivers 2 is finally getting DLSS and FSR support in massive May 27 update

Arrowhead and Nixxes bring DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, VRR, and more to Helldivers 2 in a massive May 27 technical overhaul across PC and consoles

Arrowhead Game Studios announced that on May 27, 2026, Helldivers 2 will receive one of the most significant technical updates since the game launched in February 2024.

The studio partnered with Nixxes, the same team that previously helped shrink the game’s install size by 85 percent, to deliver a sweeping set of improvements focused on upscaling, visual performance, and input latency across all platforms. The patch is titled “Optimizing Liberty,” and if the feature list is anything to go by, the name earns it.

The announcement came with a particular image that’s already making rounds online: a collage of around 50 Reddit posts from players begging for upscaling support over the past two years, titled simply “we heard you”.

It’s a rare moment of self-awareness from Arrowhead, a studio that has had a rough relationship with its community lately, sitting at a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam with 67 percent of recent reviews being negative. This update is clearly an attempt to start repairing that.

Upscaling for everyone, finally

The headline feature of the May 27 patch is the arrival of modern upscaling support across every platform Helldivers 2 runs on, something the community had demanded since day one.

On PC, players will have access to FSR 4.0.3 on supported GPUs, FSR 3.1.5, DLSS 4.5, and XeSS 3.0. PS5 Pro users get PSSR . And both PS5 and Xbox players will have FSR 3.1. That covers the full range of NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel hardware on PC, plus all current-gen consoles.

What makes this particularly notable is the engine Helldivers 2 runs on. The game uses Autodesk Stingray, a discontinued engine that hasn’t been actively developed in years. Getting DLSS, FSR 4, and XeSS working inside a dead engine is not a small task, and yet Nixxes made it happen.

Earlier in the game’s lifespan, former Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt famously called DLSS “cool tech, but not necessary,” adding that when forced to choose between content and tech features, the decision was easy. Two years of community pressure later, the calculus clearly changed.

Beyond upscaling, the patch also brings Variable Rate Shading to reduce GPU load, Dynamic Resolution Scaling integrated for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC to keep frame rates stable during intense combat scenarios, and a resolution bump to 1440p in the Performance preset on both PS5 and Xbox Series X. PS5 and PS5 Pro are also getting Variable Refresh Rate support, which eliminates screen tearing on compatible displays without the downsides of traditional V-Sync.

Less input lag across all NVIDIA and AMD hardware

Alongside the visual improvements, the May 27 update also addresses input latency directly. NVIDIA Reflex is being added for NVIDIA GPU users, and AMD Anti-Lag 2 is fully supported for AMD users. Both technologies work by optimizing how the CPU and GPU communicate, reducing the delay between a button press and what appears on screen.

For a game built around timed stratagems, coordinated squad maneuvers, and quick reactions against waves of Terminids and Automatons, that reduction in responsiveness gap is something players will notice.

Arrowhead has been clear that this patch is not the end of the technical work, it’s described as the first step in an ongoing campaign to improve the game’s performance across all platforms.

The changes will be monitored and more updates are planned for later in the summer, with Nixxes continuing to support the effort. Given that this same studio managed to get a legacy engine to support four simultaneous upscaling technologies at once, there’s reasonable optimism about what the next phase might bring.

It’s been a long road for Helldivers 2 fans who just wanted the game to run better. May 27 is when that wait ends, at least the first part of it.

A Warhammer 40k collaboration is coming

A Warhammer 40k collaboration is coming

As if the technical update wasn’t enough, Arrowhead dropped a second announcement the same day at Warhammer Skulls: a Helldivers 2 x Warhammer 40k Warbond is officially happening.

It’s the third Legendary Warbond the game has seen, following Halo 3: ODST and Killzone, and easily the most requested crossover since launch. Game director Mikael Eriksson confirmed the news, saying the studio is packed with die-hard Warhammer fans and that both universes are a natural fit, soldiers built for extreme violence liberating a galaxy from alien threats sounds about right for both franchises.

Specific contents haven’t been revealed yet, but if previous Legendary Warbonds are any indication, players can expect themed armor, weapons, cosmetics, and possibly a vehicle. No release date has been set — Arrowhead says more details are coming later this year.
