GTA VI basically a PlayStation exclusive, says industry’s most tusted source

Jason Schreier, Bloomberg’s gaming editor and arguably the most reliable voice in the industry, dropped a bombshell during the latest Button Mash podcast episode: Grand Theft Auto VI is “kind of like” a PlayStation 5 exclusive.

Yeah, you read that right, even though the game is confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, Schreier claims Microsoft’s consoles are “practically irrelevant” for this launch.

Schreier laid it out: “I’m sure [GTA VI] will sell millions on Xbox, but PlayStation is the main platform. So in a way, it’s like a PlayStation exclusive. Most sales will be on PS5, and a lot of PlayStation 5 consoles will be sold because of it“.

He didn’t hold back, emphasizing that Rockstar Games clearly expects the sandbox phenomenon to dominate Sony’s ecosystem.

Take-Two CEO admits gaming is moving to PC, GTA 6 still isn't

Sony’s playing chess while others play checkers

Here’s where it gets interesting. Schreier revealed that Sony is fully aware of GTA VI’s massive impact and is strategically planning its release calendar around it. Translation? Don’t expect any major PlayStation first-party titles launching anywhere near Rockstar’s juggernaut.

In fact, he speculates Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine might drop in September or October 2025 to avoid the inevitable GTA VI traffic jam.

The scheduled release date sits at November 19, 2026, but Schreier hinted at a possible delay since development isn’t finished and there’s still incomplete content. If true, that November date might shift, again.

Marketing muscle and console bundles

This aligns perfectly with previous claims from Bend Studios developer Alex Smith, who stated back in 2023 that GTA VI secured an exclusive marketing deal with PlayStation.

Smith also mentioned Sony plans to launch a special PS5 Pro bundle packed with a copy of Grand Theft Auto VI. If that rumor materializes, expect PS5 sales to skyrocket around launch.

YouTuber RedGamingTech echoed similar sentiments in September 2024, claiming PlayStation locked down marketing rights. Take-Two Interactive hasn’t confirmed any of this officially, so we’re in wait-and-see mode. But with Jason Schreier’s track record? This intel carries serious weight.

What’s undeniable is that GTA VI remains the most anticipated game of the decade, and analysts predict console sales will surge as launch approaches. Whether you’re Team PlayStation or Team Xbox, this release will reshape the gaming landscape.
