Game Freak just pulled off something nobody saw coming. The studio that’s been churning out Pokémon games since the mid-90s decided to ditch the cute pocket monsters and go full post-apocalyptic with Beast of Reincarnation, a gritty action RPG heading to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC this summer. And yeah, it’s hitting Xbox Game Pass day one.
During January 2026’s Xbox Developer Direct, Game Freak unveiled what might be their most ambitious project yet.
Forget everything you know about their colorful, family-friendly adventures, this one’s set in Japan circa 4026, where plants have basically taken over the world and massive beasts are hunting down what’s left of humanity.
It’s a wild departure, and honestly, it’s about time they flexed their creative muscles beyond Nintendo’s ecosystem.
A desolate Japan and an unlikely partnership
You play as Emma, a young woman with special powers that let her survive and fight against the overgrown vegetation strangling civilization.
But here’s the catch: her abilities freak people out, so she’s been living solo, isolated from society. That changes when she meets Koo, a fierce wolf-like creature who becomes her partner. Together, they set out to take down the Beast of Reincarnation and the colossal creatures blocking their path.
The game blends intense action RPG combat with exploration across a devastated Japanese landscape. Director Kota Furushima, who’s worked on Pokémon titles since Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, explained that movement and traversal are core to the experience.

Emma can summon branches to create bridges, ladders, and platforms, letting you navigate ruins and uncover secrets hidden in this overgrown world.
Combat itself mixes real-time action with tactical menu-based abilities, time slows when you select skills, giving fights a strategic edge. You’re not just button-mashing; you’re dodging, defending, and waiting for the perfect opening to strike.
Beyond the sword: Stealth, ranged combat, and Xbox Game Pass
Emma’s arsenal goes beyond close-quarters blade work. She’s got bows and ranged weapons for distance attacks, stealth mechanics for surprise takedowns, and the ability to let Koo handle enemies while she stays hidden. There’s also a skill tree that unlocks new abilities as you progress, rewarding exploration and combat mastery.
Beast of Reincarnation launches summer 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC, and it’s included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from day one.

xboPlus, it supports Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning one digital purchase gets you access across Xbox Series X, PC, laptops, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Windows handhelds like the ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go.
Your progress syncs across all platforms, so you can jump between devices without losing a beat.
Game Freak’s stepping outside their comfort zone, and this gritty, atmospheric adventure looks like it could be their breakout hit beyond the Pokémon universe. Summer can’t get here fast enough.
