Imagine sitting on a train, minding your own business, when your dad hands you a letter that changes everything. That’s exactly what happened to Dominic McLaughlin, the young actor stepping into the iconic role of Harry Potter for HBO’s upcoming series reboot.
In a recent interview on BBC’s “Saturday Mash-Up! Live,” McLaughlin shared the surreal moment he received personal words of encouragement from none other than Daniel Radcliffe himself—the actor who brought the boy wizard to life across eight blockbuster films.
“It was insane,” McLaughlin recalled. “My Dad tapped me on the train and just gave me this letter. I read it and then I got to the bottom, and it said, ‘Dan R.’ I was going mad, but I had to (keep cool). I was on the train.”

Passing the wand to a new generation
The gesture speaks volumes about the mutual respect between the original cast and the fresh faces taking on these beloved roles. Radcliffe revealed on “Good Morning America” last month that he wanted to reach out before filming kicked off, not to overshadow the experience but to offer genuine support.
“I don’t want to be a specter in the life of these children but I just wanted to write to him to say, ‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did,'” Radcliffe explained. Looking at photos of Dominic McLaughlin and his co-stars—Alastair Stout as Ron and Arabella Stanton as Hermione—the now 35-year-old actor admitted feeling both nostalgic and amazed. “I just want to hug them. They just seem so young.”
It’s not just Radcliffe who’s extending a warm welcome. Rupert Grint, who portrayed Ron Weasley in the original films, confirmed he also wrote a letter to Stout, officially “passing the baton” to the next generation.
“I had so much fun stepping into this world, and I hope he has the same experience,” Grint told the BBC. He even noted a “bit of family resemblance” between himself and Stout, adding that he’s genuinely intrigued to see how this new adaptation unfolds.
Filming underway and spirits high
Despite the pressure of following in such legendary footsteps, McLaughlin sounds thrilled about the journey so far. “It’s going amazing,” he shared. “It’s going really well. I’ve made good friends with everyone, it’s great to be there.”
The HBO series, set to premiere on HBO Max in 2027, promises to be a fresh take on J.K. Rowling’s magical universe. With the original cast offering their blessings and the new generation bringing their own energy to Hogwarts, fans have plenty of reasons to be excited about this next chapter in wizarding history.
