Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 Pro enhanced patch brings Sony’s PSSR upscaling

CD Projekt Red confirms a free PS5 Pro Enhanced update for Cyberpunk 2077 with upgraded PSSR upscaling, bringing improved image quality and visual stability to Night City.

CD Projekt Red and Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed today that Cyberpunk 2077 will receive a free PS5 Pro Enhanced update in the “not-too-distant future,” and it will fully support the upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, better known as PSSR. The official Cyberpunk 2077 account on X put it simply: “Get ready to go PS5 Pro, chooms, a free Cyberpunk 2077 technological update for the PS5 version of the game is coming in the not-too-distant future!”

What makes this announcement particularly surprising is that CD Projekt Red had said there were no plans to support PS5 Pro back in November 2024, and the studio further reiterated that stance regarding patch 2.2. So for over a year, PS5 Pro owners who wanted to explore Night City in its best possible form were basically out of luck. There were even reports suggesting hardware limitations were part of the reason a PS5 Pro patch wasn’t happening. The arrival of the new PSSR changed everything.

Before getting too excited about new content, there isn’t any. This update will not introduce any new in-game content. It will release only for the PS5 version and is solely focused on allowing the game to take advantage of the expanded hardware capabilities of the PS5 Pro. Pure technical upgrade, nothing more. CDPR confirmed there are no current plans to introduce any new expansion or DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, as the studio is shifting focus to Cyberpunk 2, which entered pre-production as of May 2025.

What the new PSSR actually does

PSSR is PS5 Pro’s machine-learning-based upscaler, which improves game resolution without impacting performance. The technology debuted with the PS5 Pro in 2024, but there were complaints about how it functioned in certain games. The upgraded version that Cyberpunk 2077 will use is a different story altogether.

The upgraded PSSR is an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel as it upscales game visuals. With this latest evolution, image reconstruction is more precise, motion stability is improved, and developers have greater flexibility to balance performance and fidelity on PS5 Pro. Sony has noted that the algorithm and neural network behind the new PSSR originate from its Project Amethyst partnership with AMD.

The results are already proving themselves in other titles. In its analysis of the updated PSSR in Resident Evil Requiem, tech experts Digital Foundry called it “the real deal,” noting that fine details, edge clarity, and overall image quality present as legitimately high-quality 4K output at 60fps. That same technology is what’s coming to Night City.

The upgraded PSSR began rolling out in phases on March 16 at 10:00 PM Pacific Time with the latest PS5 system software update. Cyberpunk 2077 doesn’t have a specific release date for its patch yet, but CDPR has promised more details in the coming weeks.

A big wave of games is already on board

Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t the only title joining the party. Several games are already integrating the upgraded PSSR, including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. Assassin’s Creed Shadows will also benefit from the new technology in the coming weeks.

The timing of this patch also speaks to just how relevant Cyberpunk 2077 remains. CD Projekt Red announced the game had sold over 35 million units worldwide as of November 26, 2025, an extraordinary number for a title that launched in December 2020 under a cloud of controversy and technical problems. The comeback story of this game is genuinely one of the most remarkable in the history of the industry.

Right now, the PS5 Pro runs Cyberpunk 2077 at 60+ FPS in Performance mode and around 40 FPS in Ray Tracing mode. With PSSR now doing the heavy lifting on upscaling, both modes are expected to see real improvements in clarity, stability and visual fidelity once the patch drops. Exact performance targets haven’t been revealed yet, but if what PSSR has done for other games is any indication, the difference should be visible.

For anyone who played through Night City years ago and moved on, this patch might be the excuse you needed to go back. And for those who haven’t touched it yet, this is shaping up to be the best version of the game ever released on console.
