Crisol: Theater of Idols confirms February release date

The twisted reimagining of Spain arrives February 10, where every bullet costs you life and every decision means survival.

Blumhouse Games and Vermila Studios recently announced that Crisol: Theater of Idols will arrive on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on February 10 with a price tag of $17.99 USD.

The first-person survival horror set in a twisted version of Spain finally has a release date after months of anticipation, and Steam players will receive a 10% discount on the base price at launch.

The game transports players to Hispania, a dark and nightmarish reimagining of Spain, specifically to the cursed island of Tormentosa. The premise puts players in the shoes of Gabriel, a soldier who receives a divine mission from the Sun God. The most striking feature is the core mechanic: Gabriel uses his own blood as ammunition, draining his life with each shot, turning every bullet into a survival decision.

Blood as your weapon, and your curse

The blood-as-ammo mechanic is what sets Crisol apart from other horror shooters. Every time you need to reload your weapon, you must drain your own health, creating constant tension between attacking enemies and staying alive.

There’s no automatic regeneration or infinite ammo, just blood syringes hidden throughout the scenarios or corpses you can extract blood from to recover. This dynamic puts the “survival” back in survival horror, forcing players to think strategically about every encounter.

David Carrasco, CEO of Vermila Studios, has been transparent about the game’s influences: Resident Evil (specifically 4, 7, and 8) for structure and gameplay, BioShock for artistic design and atmosphere, and Dishonored for its art emphasis.

The Madrid-based studio worked for five years with an unusually large art team of around 20 people to create a world that feels familiar yet nightmarish, featuring authentic Spanish architecture, Catholic folklore, and creatures inspired by real religious statues from Spain.

Crisol’s enemies are unsettling compositions of marionettes and religious statues brought to life. One of the most prominent antagonists is Dolores, a giant, invincible creature who chases the player in intense terror sequences where running is the only option.

All enemies are designed from real Spanish statues and Catholic symbolism, giving the game a unique visual identity unseen before in the genre.

The demo currently available on Steam has received praise from media outlets who played it at events like Summer Game Fest, highlighting the atmosphere of Tormentosa’s cobbled streets, puzzles that require environmental awareness, and the Resident Evil-style inventory management system.

Even the game’s signs and posters remain in Spanish regardless of the selected language, a detail Vermila Studios decided to keep to preserve the title’s cultural identity rather than dilute it for international audiences.

Crisol: Theater of Idols promises between 10 and 14 hours of gameplay, with a skill upgrade system, multiple weapons (pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle) that can be upgraded with coins found during exploration, and a narrative that blends historical events, folklore, and religious horror. The game doesn’t rely on jump scares but on constant tension, chases, and the threat of running out of life while battling unimaginable horrors.

This is Blumhouse Games’ second release following Fear the Spotlight in October 2024, showcasing the diverse range of horror experiences the company aims to deliver.

With its confirmed date for February 10, Crisol: Theater of Idols is set to become one of the most intriguing horror releases of the year.
