Banjo-Kazooie finally gets its PC port

The classic N64 platformer gets a fan-made native port with modern features, ultrawide support, and smooth framerates, no emulation required.

A team of modders just dropped Banjo: Recompiled, bringing the N64 classic to PC with features the original could only dream of.

This isn’t your average emulation, it’s a native PC port that runs buttery smooth with high framerates, ultrawide support, and mod compatibility right out of the box.

What makes this port special

Banjo: Recompiled uses N64: Recompiled technology combined with the RT64 rendering engine, allowing the game to run at framerates well above 60FPS and support resolutions far beyond what the 1998 original could handle.

The port preserves every quirky detail from the N64 version, the jigsaw puzzle screen transitions, Bottles’ Moving Picture Game, even the original mipmapping quality. The audio processing is spot-on too, with no popping or stuttering, keeping that authentic N64 sound intact.

This project became possible thanks to a decompilation effort that started back in 2022 and reached 100% completion in August 2024.

While that decompilation opened the door, the real magic happened when modders applied the N64: Recompiled tool, which transforms N64 binaries into C code that can run natively on modern systems. The result is a port available for Windows, Linux, and Mac.

How to play it

The v1.0.0 release is available now on GitHub, though you’ll need to provide your own legally-sourced ROM of Banjo-Kazooie, the software extracts assets like character models, textures, and audio from your ROM and combines them with the recompiled code.

If you’re running Intel graphics, make sure your drivers are updated directly from Intel’s website to avoid crashes or glitches.

Banjo-Kazooie originally launched on Nintendo 64 in 1998 as one of Rare’s most celebrated platformers. Since Microsoft acquired Rare in 2002, the series has remained dormant aside from the divisive Nuts & Bolts in 2008 and some re-releases.

This fan-made port joins an expanding library of recompiled N64 games including Majora’s Mask, Mario Kart 64, and Perfect Dark, proving that classic games can thrive on modern hardware when passionate communities get involved.
