The claws might be coming back out sooner than expected. According to insider reports from MyTimeToShineHello, Marvel Studios is developing a solo Wolverine movie starring Hugh Jackman, and honestly, after the massive success of Deadpool and Wolverine, this feels like the most inevitable news we could’ve gotten.
Here’s where things get interesting. Marvel just filed a new trademark for “Wolverine” on December 12, 2025, covering film and television production. Now, trademark filings don’t always mean a project is greenlit, but the timing is pretty suspicious considering Jackman recently went on The View and said his gut tells him he’s “not done” with the character. When an actor drops hints like that and Marvel suddenly locks down the trademark, it’s hard not to connect the dots.
What this could mean for the MCU
The biggest question on everyone’s mind is how this fits into Marvel’s larger mutant plans. Recent rumors suggest the upcoming X-Men reboot directed by Jake Schreier won’t focus on Wolverine at all, instead centering on Cyclops and the Summers family. That would actually make a lot of sense if Marvel wants to give Jackman his own standalone space in the MCU without stepping on the toes of whatever younger Wolverine they eventually cast for the main X-Men timeline.
Think about it: Jackman finally gets to play in the full MCU sandbox after spending over two decades in Fox’s X-Men universe. We’re talking potential interactions with the Avengers, maybe that long-rumored Wolverine vs. Hulk showdown that fans have been begging for since the dawn of time, and the chance to see Logan in a world that’s way bigger than what he’s experienced before.
The man won’t say never again
During his recent press tour appearances, Jackman has been refreshingly honest about his Wolverine future. On The Graham Norton Show, he admitted he’s learned his lesson about making absolute statements. “I am never saying ‘never’ ever again,” he said, acknowledging that while he genuinely meant it when he retired after Logan in 2017, things change. And boy, did they change when Deadpool and Wolverine became one of the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time.
Kevin Feige himself reportedly wants to keep Jackman around as long as possible, which makes sense from both a creative and business standpoint. The actor has hinted he could play Wolverine for another decade, and with the multiverse allowing him to portray different variants, there’s really no storytelling reason to stop.
The real beauty of this setup is that Marvel can have their cake and eat it too. Jackman continues doing his thing while they slowly build toward introducing a new, younger Wolverine for the rebooted X-Men franchise. Dafne Keen’s return as X-23 in Deadpool and Wolverine also opened up possibilities for passing the torch eventually, but that doesn’t have to happen tomorrow.
Whether this solo movie happens before or after Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars remains to be seen, but one thing’s clear: Wolverine’s MCU journey is far from over, and fans couldn’t be happier about it.
