Wolfenstein 3 development reportedly underway

Machine Games isn’t slowing down after wrapping up Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Reports suggest the Bethesda studio is simultaneously developing Wolfenstein 3 alongside a tactical multiplayer game nobody saw coming, potentially marking a major shift for the developer known for its single-player FPS experiences.

Terror Billy returns for round three

According to sources cited by Windows Central and Kotaku, Machine Games has officially started work on Wolfenstein 3, the long-awaited conclusion to the rebooted trilogy.

The franchise, which predates even DOOM as an FPS pioneer, found new life under Machine Games with fresh takes on the alternate-history Nazi-dominated world where B.J. Blazkowicz fights back against fascism.

It’s been six years since Wolfenstein: Youngblood hit stores in 2019 as a cooperative spin-off. Fans have been hungry for a proper sequel ever since Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus wrapped up in 2017, and the studio always acknowledged they had one more chapter to tell.

The success of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle apparently reinvigorated the team, and now they’re ready to close out Terror Billy’s story.

The unexpected twist: A Rainbow six-style shooter

Here’s where things get interesting. Wolfenstein 3 isn’t Machine Games’ only project in development. Insider reports reveal the studio is working on an online multiplayer game with a tactical approach similar to Rainbow Six.

This would be a cooperative experience focused on team-based objectives and strategic gameplay, a completely different direction from the narrative-driven, single-player campaigns Machine Games built its reputation on.

Details about this mysterious multiplayer project remain scarce, with the studio keeping everything under wraps. The move signals Machine Games might be expanding its portfolio beyond story-heavy shooters, though whether this new game connects to an existing franchise or represents something entirely fresh remains unknown.

With both a AAA sequel and an experimental multiplayer title in the works, Machine Games looks busier than ever.

Whether they can stick the landing on both projects while maintaining the quality that made Indiana Jones and the Great Circle such a hit remains to be seen.
