Remember when the internet collectively lost its mind over Sonic’s original movie design? Those human-like teeth and unsettling proportions sparked such backlash that Paramount delayed the film and completely redesigned the Blue Blur. Now, a dedicated group of fans wants to bring that infamous version back to life.
“Sonic The Hedgehog: The 2019 Cut” is a full fan-made reconstruction aiming to recreate what the movie would have looked like with the original design. The project, documented on social media under the handle @SonicCut2026, represents an ambitious effort to preserve a piece of cinema history that never made it to theaters.
The story behind the redesign
When the first trailer dropped in April 2019, fan reaction was swift and brutal. The realistic approach to Sonic’s design, complete with human teeth, muscular legs, and separated eyes, was deemed “nightmare fuel” by the community. Director Jeff Fowler listened, announcing on Twitter that changes were coming. The film was pushed from November 2019 to Valentine’s Day 2020, and artist Tyson Hesse led a seven-week redesign that transformed Sonic into the character fans recognized and loved.

Why reconstruct the original?
While most people are glad the redesign happened, there’s growing curiosity about what could have been. According to recent interviews with writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the original cut featured different scenes, including an altered prologue. Only the footage seen in that first trailer was fully completed with the original design, making a complete reconstruction a fascinating technical challenge.
This fan project taps into that curiosity, offering a glimpse at an alternate timeline where “Ugly Sonic” led a franchise that has now grossed over $720 million worldwide and spawned three successful films.
