Teresa Palmer joins the God of War series as Sif

Palmer joins Ryan Hurst in Amazon's epic Norse mythology adaptation

Prime Video’s God of War series just added another major piece to its cast. Deadline confirmed that actress Teresa Palmer will portray Sif, Thor’s wife, in the highly anticipated adaptation of PlayStation’s iconic franchise.

This announcement comes shortly after Ryan Hurst was revealed as Kratos, setting the stage for what promises to be an epic journey through the Nine Realms.

Palmer, a well-known actress with a solid career in film and television, steps into a role that’s both pivotal and intriguing given the series’ creative direction.

Sif is a key character in Norse mythology and the God of War universe, though her inclusion in season one raises some fascinating questions about how the show plans to adapt the source material.

Creative liberties and timeline adjustments

Here’s where things get interesting. The first season will reportedly cover the events of God of War (2018), the game that rebooted the franchise and introduced Kratos and his son Atreus to Norse mythology after the Greek saga concluded.

The problem? Sif doesn’t actually appear in that game. She made her debut in God of War Ragnarök (2022), the sequel that wrapped up the Norse storyline. This confirms the series will take creative liberties with the timeline and character introductions, potentially weaving elements from both games into a cohesive narrative.

Fans shouldn’t panic, though. The creative team behind this adaptation is stacked with people who know the franchise inside out. Cory Barlog, director of God of War (2018), serves as executive producer, ensuring the show stays true to the game’s spirit.

Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, is also on board as executive producer, providing direct oversight from the gaming side. With both of them supervising the creative process, the series is in capable hands.

Production details

Production for God of War is set to begin this March in Vancouver, Canada. The series is a collaboration between PlayStation Studios, Sony Pictures, and Amazon MGM Studios, bringing together the best of gaming, film, and streaming expertise.

Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on Outlander and For All Mankind, serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Frederick E. O. Toye, who directed episodes of The Boys and Shogun, will helm the first two episodes.

The casting announcements are just beginning, and fans are eager to see who will bring Atreus, Baldur, Freya, Thor, and Odin to life. These characters are central to the game’s narrative, and their casting will be crucial to the series’ success.

Sony Pictures is going all-in on video game adaptations. Beyond God of War, they’re developing The Legend of Zelda movie with Nintendo Productions, set for theatrical release in May 2027, with Netflix securing streaming rights afterward. A Horizon movie is in pre-production, along with both a film and an anime based on Ghost of Tsushima.

God of War is expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2027, giving fans plenty of time to replay the games and speculate about how the show will handle this beloved story.
