SpaceGodzilla confirmed as Godzilla x Kong: Supernova villain

The MonsterVerse just got a whole lot more cosmic. After months of speculation and cryptic social media teases, it’s now official: SpaceGodzilla will make his Hollywood debut as the main antagonist in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, set to hit theaters on March 26, 2027.

The confirmation came through an updated listing on the Writers Guild of America website, which credits screenwriters David Callaham and Michael Lloyd Green. The listing explicitly states the film is based on characters “Godzilla” and “Space Godzilla” owned by Toho Co., Ltd. While fans had their suspicions for weeks, this marks the first concrete evidence that the crystalline kaiju will join the MonsterVerse roster.

A villain three decades in the making

SpaceGodzilla first terrorized audiences in the 1994 Toho film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. This mutated clone of the King of the Monsters has one of the wildest origin stories in the franchise, formed when Godzilla’s cells were sucked into a black hole, fused with crystalline organisms, and emerged as something completely new. The result? A cosmic nightmare with massive crystal spikes replacing Godzilla’s iconic dorsal fins and powers that rival the original titan himself.

SpaceGodzilla confirmed as Godzilla x Kong: Supernova villain

What makes this announcement particularly exciting is that SpaceGodzilla will be the first kaiju from outside Toho’s “Big Five” (Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mechagodzilla) to appear in the MonsterVerse. He’s also the first Heisei-era monster to make the jump to another live-action film outside that era. For longtime fans who’ve watched SpaceGodzilla dominate video games and comics for years, seeing him rendered with modern visual effects is going to be nothing short of spectacular.

The Supernova connection

The film’s subtitle suddenly makes a lot more sense. “Supernova” heavily implies a celestial threat, and SpaceGodzilla fits that bill perfectly. Director Grant Sputore, taking over from Adam Wingard, is working with a stacked cast that includes Dan Stevens reprising his role as Trapper, alongside newcomers Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, and Sam Neill.

Production is currently underway at Village Roadshow Studios in Australia, with filming also taking place in Bangkok and the UK. According to official plot details, the film will feature “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.” That threat, of course, is now confirmed to be the crystalline menace himself.

The MonsterVerse has steadily embraced its wilder side since the relatively grounded 2014 Godzilla, and SpaceGodzilla represents the franchise going full throttle into the kind of bonkers kaiju action that made the Toho films legendary. After facing the Scar King and Shimo in The New Empire, Godzilla and Kong will need to team up once again against an enemy who theoretically matches or exceeds their combined power.
