The blue blur isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Fresh off the record-breaking success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Paramount Pictures has confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is entering active development, with production expected to kick off in summer 2026 ahead of its March 19, 2027 theatrical release.
Director Jeff Fowler, who’s helmed all three previous films in the franchise, recently shared that the creative team is taking a well-deserved break after Sonic 3’s whirlwind release before diving into the next chapter. Development is likely to begin in early February 2025, giving the team roughly a year and a half to prepare before cameras start rolling in mid-2026.
Bigger budget, bigger adventure
The fourth installment promises to be the biggest Sonic adventure yet, both in scope and budget. Industry insiders report that Sonic 4 will have a larger production budget than its predecessors, continuing an upward trend that saw the franchise grow from $85-90 million for the first film to $122 million for Sonic 3. This increased investment makes sense considering the film’s ambitious storyline, which appears to draw inspiration from the beloved Sonic CD video game.
Sonic 3’s mid-credits scene teased the introduction of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, two fan-favorite characters who will play central roles in the upcoming sequel. The post-credits stinger hinted at time travel elements, suggesting Sonic might be hopping through different eras to stop Dr. Robotnik’s metallic creation from wreaking havoc.
The returning cast includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails. Jim Carrey has also expressed openness to reprising his role as the villainous Dr. Robotnik, walking back previous retirement comments. Meanwhile, Keanu Reeves’ Shadow the Hedgehog might sit this one out, with rumors suggesting he’ll get his own spin-off film scheduled for December 2028.
Racing toward 2027
The March 2027 release date puts Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in a competitive position against heavy hitters like Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars and a new Monsterverse installment. However, the franchise has proven it can hold its own at the box office. The first three films have collectively earned over $1 billion worldwide, with Sonic 3 becoming the highest-grossing entry in the series.
Paramount’s confidence in the franchise is evident not just in the fourth film’s green light, but in their broader plans for the Sonic Cinematic Universe. The studio has already dated a mysterious spin-off for 2028, proving that Sonic’s Hollywood journey is far from over.
