Big news just dropped for fans eagerly waiting for Matt Reeves’ sequel. Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in final negotiations to join the cast of “The Batman: Part II” at Warner Bros. Pictures, according to a report from Nexus Point News that has since been backed up by the major trades.
This marks a significant addition to what’s already shaping up to be another powerhouse ensemble for Reeves’ dark and grounded take on Gotham City. The director’s first Batman film earned over $770 million worldwide and received critical acclaim for its noir-inspired approach to the Dark Knight’s story. While the studio is keeping Johansson’s exact role under wraps for now, the casting has already sparked intense discussion across fan communities about who she might be playing.
The mystery role
Warner Bros. isn’t giving anything away just yet about Johansson’s character, but that hasn’t stopped fans from theorizing. Early speculation points to possibilities ranging from a new romantic interest for Bruce Wayne to a major villain like Poison Ivy. Given Reeves’ track record of delivering fresh interpretations of classic Batman characters, whatever role Johansson lands is bound to be something special.
Johansson is no stranger to superhero franchises, having portrayed Black Widow across multiple Marvel films, so her transition to the DC universe is particularly exciting for fans who’ve followed her action-hero career.

Production moves forward
Pre-production is already underway in Glasgow, and the sequel appears to be moving at a brisk pace. The studio has indicated that additional casting announcements are expected soon, with cameras set to roll early next year.
The sequel continues to build on Reeves’ expanding Gotham universe, which recently grew with HBO’s successful Penguin series starring Colin Farrell. Speaking of which, the confirmed returning cast includes Robert Pattinson reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Farrell as Oz Cobb/The Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. However, ZoĆ« Kravitz has confirmed she won’t be returning as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, leaving a notable absence in the sequel’s lineup.
Johansson’s packed schedule
The timing works out for Scarlett Johansson, who’s coming off the massive success of “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” one of this year’s biggest box office performers. She’s expected to return for a sequel alongside co-stars Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.
Before stepping into Gotham, Johansson will first shoot Mike Flanagan’s new reboot of “The Exorcist” franchise, keeping her schedule packed with high-profile projects.
Recently, Johansson also made her directorial debut with “Eleanor the Great,” which premiered at Cannes. Between her Marvel legacy and various blockbusters, she’s recently achieved the milestone of becoming the highest-grossing actor of all-time, making her addition to “The Batman: Part II” even more noteworthy for the franchise.
