Razer Project AVA: The holographic AI waifu comes to your desk

Razer unveiled today at CES 2026 the next evolution of Project AVA, transforming its AI gaming assistant from a screen-based concept into a physical holographic companion that sits on your desk.

The 5.5-inch animated avatar lives inside a sleek capsule, complete with an HD eye-tracking camera and far-field microphone, and it’s actually available for reservation right now with a $20 refundable deposit.

Project AVA first appeared at CES 2025 as an esports AI coach designed to analyze gameplay and offer real-time tips. This year’s version expands that vision dramatically, AVA isn’t just watching your screen anymore, it’s watching you too.

The device features multiple customizable avatars, including Kira, an anime-style character in a green dress and thigh-high socks, and Zane, a muscular gaming wingman covered in snake tattoos. Razer plans to add more avatars later, including esports legends like Faker and a minimalist glowing orb.

Beyond gaming assistance

What makes this announcement particularly bold is Razer’s positioning of AVA as far more than a gaming tool. The company describes it as a “personal life organizer” and “digital partner” designed to handle everyday tasks alongside gaming support.

AVA can manage your calendar, suggest what to eat for dinner, offer wardrobe advice, help with brainstorming sessions, and even act as a wellness coach.

The PC Vision Mode allows the AI to see both your screen and you in real-time, creating what Razer calls “full contextual awareness.”

Currently, Project AVA runs on xAI’s Grok model, yes, the same one from Elon Musk’s platform X, though Razer insists the system will eventually support multiple AI platforms, including a dedicated Razer AI engine.

The device connects to Windows PCs via USB-C cable and requires that wired connection for the high-bandwidth data transfers needed to analyze your screen with minimal latency.

Users activate AVA through custom key bindings, like a mouse button, making interaction feel more natural during gaming sessions.

The reality check

Hands-on demos from CES attendees paint a mixed picture. While the holographic display and avatar animations are undeniably eye-catching, the actual AI performance mirrors the limitations of current chatbots, occasional tangents, hallucinations, and awkward responses.

The device also raises obvious privacy questions, as it constantly monitors both your screen and physical space through dual cameras.

Razer is targeting a second-half 2026 release for Project AVA, though final pricing remains under wraps. The company is accepting reservations exclusively in the United States through its website, with that $20 deposit fully refundable and credited toward the final purchase price.

It’s a bold bet on AI companions becoming normalized in gaming setups, arriving at a time when skepticism about AI implementation is growing across the tech community.
