The animation and gaming community is mourning the loss of Jim Ward, the talented voice actor who brought life to some of our most beloved characters. Ward passed away on December 10, 2025, at the age of 66, as confirmed by his longtime radio colleague Stephanie Miller, who shared the heartbreaking message from Ward’s wife, Janice.
A voice that defined childhoods
Ward’s career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on animation and video games. He’s perhaps best remembered for his iconic portrayal of Captain Qwark in the Ratchet & Clank franchise, a role he held from the series’ beginning. His comedic timing and larger-than-life performance made the bumbling space hero an instant fan favorite.
In The Fairly OddParents, Ward voiced both the enthusiastic news anchor Chet Ubetcha and the unforgettable Doug Dimmadome, owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome. These characters became cultural touchstones for an entire generation of viewers. He also lent his voice to Diamondhead and XLR8 in Ben 10, further cementing his status as a versatile performer who could tackle any character thrown his way.
His work extended beyond these flagship roles. Ward voiced characters in countless other projects, from video games like Fallout: New Vegas to animated shows across multiple networks. His talent earned him a Daytime Emmy Award in 2009 for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program.
A difficult journey
Ward retired from voice acting in 2021 after developing an early-onset form of Alzheimer’s disease. He later contracted a severe case of COVID-19 that left him hospitalized for four months, during which he had to relearn basic functions like walking and eating. Despite these challenges, his wife shared that parts of his creative spirit remained intact—he could still play harmonica, guitar, and do voices even as the disease progressed.
From 2004 to 2017, Ward also served as co-host of The Stephanie Miller Show, where his celebrity impressions and quick wit entertained radio audiences nationwide. Miller lovingly referred to him as the “voice deity,” a title that perfectly captured his extraordinary talent.
Ward leaves behind a legacy that will continue to resonate through the characters he brought to life. His voice will forever be part of the memories of millions who grew up watching and playing the properties he helped shape.
