Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions officially announced on today that Jason Momoa has been cast as the lead in the live-action adaptation of Helldivers, the popular cooperative shooter video game.
Directed by Justin Lin, known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise, the film is set to hit theaters on November 10, 2027, bringing the chaotic bug-blasting action of Super Earth to the big screen.
The Helldivers movie is written by Gary Dauberman, the scribe behind horror hits like It and the Annabelle films, which suggests a darker, more intense tone for this sci-fi war spectacle. The project is based on the original Helldivers game that launched in 2015, but it’s the explosive success of Helldivers 2 in 2024 that truly put the franchise on the map.

The sequel sold over 12 million units across PlayStation 5 and PC in just four months, and recently expanded to Xbox, proving the game’s massive appeal. The story centers on an elite unit of soldiers, the Helldivers, who must defend the fictional planet of Super Earth from alien bugs and robotic threats in a satirical take on militaristic propaganda and galactic warfare.
Momoa’s growing video game empire
Jason Momoa is quickly becoming the go-to action star for video game adaptations. Beyond Helldivers, he’s starring in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie alongside Jack Black and Danielle Brooks, with a sequel already in development.
He’s also set to play Blanka in the upcoming Street Fighter film, cementing his status as Hollywood’s unofficial video game ambassador. Momoa’s physical presence and charisma make him a natural fit for the larger-than-life characters these games demand, and fans are already speculating which Helldiver role he’ll embody, though official character details remain under wraps.
PlayStation productions’ winning streak
The Helldivers film joins PlayStation Productions’ impressive lineup of adaptations. The studio previously delivered Uncharted starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, which grossed $407 million worldwide and ranks among the top ten highest-grossing video game adaptations globally.
They’re also behind HBO’s critically acclaimed The Last of Us series and Peacock’s Twisted Metal show. With this track record, PlayStation Productions has proven it knows how to translate interactive experiences into compelling cinema, giving Helldivers fans real reason for optimism.
However, not everything has been smooth sailing. Director Justin Lin reportedly doesn’t play video games, which sparked concern among the Helldivers community. But Shams Jorjani, CEO of Arrowhead Studios, the developer behind Helldivers, quickly reassured fans, stating there’s no reason to worry about Lin’s approach to the material.
The film is being produced by Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin himself through his Perfect Storm Entertainment company.

With Momoa’s star power, Lin’s action expertise, and PlayStation Productions’ proven formula, Helldivers could be the next big video game blockbuster, hopefully.
The November 2027 release gives the team plenty of time to nail the game’s signature blend of cooperative chaos, dark humor, and over-the-top patriotic satire. Democracy won’t spread itself, after all.
