How Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment was born from Tears of the Kingdom

The partnership between Nintendo and Koei Tecmo struck gold once again with Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, but this time the story behind its creation took an unexpected turn. Unlike previous collaborations, the spark didn’t come from Kyoto’s headquarters, it came straight from the Warriors team themselves after experiencing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom firsthand.

In a recent interview, producers Yosuke Hayashi and Ryota Matsushita revealed how the Imprisoning War era practically begged to be turned into a Musou game.

After finishing Link’s latest adventure, both developers felt that historical period was screaming for massive battles and epic storytelling, the kind Warriors games do best.

A weekend that changed everything

Hayashi admitted he blazed through Tears of the Kingdom during the weekend following its launch in May 2023. That experience hit him hard, he walked away convinced the game was telling him it was time to build a Warriors title set in that era.

The Imprisoning War had everything: conflict, drama, and stakes high enough to justify armies clashing across Hyrule. He immediately reached out to Matsushita to pitch the concept.

Plot twist: Matsushita was already drafting a proposal before that conversation even happened. From his perspective, all the pieces for a Warriors game were scattered throughout Tears of the Kingdom just waiting to be assembled.

Characters, conflicts, historical context—the foundation for a large-scale action title was sitting right there.

When creative minds sync perfectly

On Nintendo’s side, Eiji Aonuma explained that during Tears of the Kingdom’s development, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi had meticulously fleshed out the events of the Imprisoning War. Once the game shipped, the idea of teaming up with Koei Tecmo again started floating around internally.

But here’s where it gets interesting: Aonuma decided to wait and see if Koei Tecmo would come to them first.

That patience paid off. Shortly after those internal Nintendo discussions, Koei Tecmo contacted them with a fully formed pitch, proving both studios were creatively locked in on the same wavelength.

The mutual trust between these companies runs deep, and it shows in how naturally this project came together.

The collaboration demonstrates how organic creative partnerships can be when studios truly understand each other’s strengths. Koei Tecmo saw the potential in Nintendo’s lore, and Nintendo trusted them enough to let the idea come naturally rather than forcing it.
