Hideo Kojima admits he skipped college classes to play Super Mario Bros

The legendary game developer behind Metal Gear and Death Stranding just revealed that Nintendo’s iconic plumber changed the course of his entire career.

Hideo Kojima doesn’t need much of an introduction. The man behind some of gaming’s most ambitious and cinematic experiences has built a reputation for pushing boundaries and creating unforgettable stories. But in a recent interview with Wired Japan, the Kojima Productions founder opened up about something unexpected: the simple side-scrolling platformer that convinced him video games were his calling.

When asked which game he’s played the most in his life, Kojima’s answer came quickly. Super Mario Bros. The 1985 Nintendo classic wasn’t just another game for him, it was a revelation that shaped his entire future.

Hideo Kojima admits he skipped college classes to play Super Mario Bros

“I played it for a year. I was a college student. I skipped school to play at home”, Kojima admitted during the interview. That level of dedication might sound extreme, but for Kojima, it made perfect sense. He was witnessing something that would fundamentally change how he viewed interactive entertainment.

The game that showed him the future

What’s fascinating about Kojima’s confession is how a game with almost no narrative convinced someone known for complex storytelling to enter the industry. Super Mario Bros. didn’t rely on cutscenes or elaborate plots. It was just Mario moving from left to right, jumping over obstacles and enemies. Yet somehow, that simplicity spoke volumes.

“It had almost no story, but it felt like you were on an adventure”, Kojima explained. “When I saw that, although it was pixel art with no story, I felt this medium would one day surpass movies”.

That conviction became the driving force behind his career. While Kojima draws heavy inspiration from filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, and John Carpenter, it was Shigeru Miyamoto’s plumber that showed him games could achieve something cinema couldn’t, pure interactive immersion.

The timing of this revelation is pretty wild when you think about it. Kojima was ready to skip actual education for a game that, by today’s standards, seems incredibly basic. But that’s the thing about truly groundbreaking experiences, they don’t need complexity to leave a lasting impact.

“Without Super Mario, I probably wouldn’t have been in this industry”, Kojima stated plainly. It’s a sobering thought for fans of Metal Gear Solid, Death Stranding, and his upcoming projects like OD and Physint. The gaming landscape would look dramatically different without Kojima’s contributions.

These days, Kojima admits he can’t really play Super Mario Bros. anymore, having exhausted every pixel of that game decades ago. But its influence clearly stuck with him, shaping his belief that video games represent an art form with unlimited potential.
