Godzilla Minus Zero stomps into theaters November 2026

Takashi Yamazaki returns with the sequel to the Oscar-winning monster phenomenon that conquered global box offices

TOHO and GKIDS officially announced today that Godzilla Minus Zero, the highly anticipated follow-up to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, will hit theaters in Japan on November 3rd, 2026, with North America getting it just three days later on November 6th.

Writer and director Takashi Yamazaki returns to helm this sequel to the highest-grossing Japan-produced Godzilla film ever, which earned over $116 million worldwide and took home Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.

A historic release date returns

The November 3rd release date carries massive significance for the franchise. It’s the exact same day the original Godzilla debuted in Japanese theaters back in 1954. Now, 72 years later, the King of the Monsters returns on that iconic date.

Godzilla Minus One also launched on November 3rd in 2023, continuing this tradition. This simultaneous rollout in Japan and North America within days of each other has never been done before for a Godzilla film, marking a bold new distribution strategy for the franchise.

Following Oscar gold

Plot details for Godzilla Minus Zero remain tightly under wraps, with TOHO promising more information in the coming months. What’s confirmed is that Yamazaki aims to top the action and emotional depth that made Minus One a global phenomenon.

David Jesteadt, President at GKIDS, stated the company is proud to bring the film to North American audiences, calling it “another defining moment for the most colossal monster ever to dominate the screen” and emphasizing the importance of experiencing it in theaters.

This marks GKIDS’ second Godzilla distribution for TOHO following their 2024 acquisition. Last year, GKIDS handled the 4K remaster and theatrical re-release of Shin Godzilla, directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame.

That 2016 film held the record as highest-grossing Japan-produced Godzilla entry for seven years with $78 million worldwide until Minus One crushed it in 2023.

Release dates for additional territories will be announced later, but one thing’s certain: Godzilla Minus Zero is positioning itself as the major monster event of late 2026.
