Activision has announced a significant change to its Call of Duty release strategy, confirming that the franchise will no longer see consecutive launches of Modern Warfare or Black Ops titles. The decision comes as part of a broader effort to address player concerns and deliver more distinctive experiences with each annual release.
In a message posted on the official Call of Duty blog, the development team acknowledged that the franchise hasn’t fully met expectations for some players. “We also know that for some of you, the franchise has not met your expectations fully,” the statement reads. “We will deliver, and overdeliver, on those expectations as we move forward.”
Breaking the pattern
The new strategy marks the end of a recent trend that saw Modern Warfare III follow Modern Warfare II in 2023, and Black Ops 7 launch just one year after Black Ops 6 in 2024. According to Activision, the primary reason for this change is ensuring an “absolutely unique experience each and every year.”
The company emphasized its commitment to meaningful innovation rather than incremental updates. While specific plans weren’t revealed, Activision promised that future announcements will showcase how the franchise intends to push the genre forward.
What this means for the franchise
This strategic pivot suggests Activision is listening to feedback about franchise fatigue. The back-to-back releases created a sense of repetition that left many players wanting more variety. By alternating between sub-franchises, development teams will have more breathing room to innovate.
Black Ops 7, which launched to a mixed reception with a Metacritic score of 67 on PC, will continue receiving robust post-launch support. Activision committed to “unprecedented seasonal support,” with Season 01 being the largest live season in franchise history. Next week, players can try the game through a free trial featuring Multiplayer and Zombies modes, accompanied by a Double XP weekend.
Despite current challenges, Activision remains optimistic about Call of Duty’s future, noting they’ve been building “the next era” of the franchise. This announcement represents more than just a scheduling change—it’s an acknowledgment that even the biggest franchises need to evolve. Whether this shift reinvigorates the series remains to be seen, but Activision is clearly taking player feedback seriously.
