The dream of a massive IT supercut isn’t dead, it’s just sleeping. Director Andy Muschietti recently revealed in a Reddit AMA that his long-discussed vision of combining both IT films into one epic experience remains very much alive. And after years of teasing fans, he’s making it clear this isn’t just talk.
Back in 2019, Muschietti first floated the idea of merging IT and IT Chapter Two into what he called “the supercut”, a monster 6+ hour version packed with deleted scenes and potentially new footage that’s never been shot. The concept seemed too good to be true, and for a while, it looked like it might stay that way. But this week, as IT: Welcome to Derry wraps its first season on HBO, Muschietti confirmed the supercut is “still a big dream of mine.” The only obstacle? Time.

The turtle scene that never was
One of the most tantalizing pieces Andy Muschietti has discussed is a deleted sequence featuring Maturin the Turtle, a cosmic entity crucial to Stephen King’s original novel. The scene would have shown adult Bill Denbrough encountering the turtle while lost in a flooded basement. It was cut for pacing, but Muschietti has described it as beautiful and emotionally powerful, exactly the kind of material fans are dying to see.
The director’s vision goes beyond just slapping deleted scenes together. He’s talked about potentially shooting additional footage to make the supercut feel like a completely new experience, not just an extended edition. With the first film running 135 minutes and Chapter Two clocking in at 169 minutes, we’re already looking at over five hours before adding anything back in.
Will It ever float?
The biggest question is whether this will actually happen. Andy Muschietti and his sister Barbara have been deep in production on Welcome to Derry, which has left little time to execute the ambitious project. But with the prequel series performing well and the IT universe expanding, there’s never been a better time to revisit Derry’s most terrifying residents.
Whether the supercut becomes a streaming event or a limited theatrical experience remains to be seen. One thing’s certain: horror fans will be waiting with their fingers crossed.
